I own an '87 Golf Cabriolet.
The gauges died completely recently and I was told that it would be the three pin voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster. I bought a replacement regulator from VW and it cured the problem. However, since replacing the regulator the gauges occasionally stop working and then come good again later. They're generally good after the vehicle has sat for a long time but then go off after a drive if I stop the car and then re-start it. My guess is that it's a loose connection of some kind but I wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem and found the cause.
My other problem is that I think the fuel sender has had it. I tried buying one from VW (Northern Rivers VW, Lismore) but they insist that it's no longer available. It's located beneath the rear seat, not in the boot as some are. The car has a carby 1.6 litre engine so this sender unit doesn't have a fuel pump attached to the bottom of it (which the other sender pictured for this model looks like it does have). I'm fairly certain that the part no. is 533 919 051 F - this is the part no. that I quoted to VW. I'd be very grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of a replacement - even a good second-hand unit would get me out of trouble.
Thanks, David.
