I don't get what you mean
Did you remove the wheel so that you can access the antenna base easily ?
Hey all. Been a while since I posted about buying my first golf. Things have progressed well and I'm learning a lot with the help of some good friends.
Fixed the brakes, lights, radio and fixed little things like door handles. Also fitted a lower strut brace someone had spare
I took a few photos along the way so will post them up soon. In the mean time, I have a question. This might sound a bit dumb, but here's my problem: the antenna has a little nib on top to stop it from falling through the bracket it sits in where it's mounted to the bonnet. Somehow the previous owner got the nib pushed down through the bracket. I want to get it back out so I can extend the antenna. It looks like there's a sort of springy washer stopping it from going through. I know there must be a sensible way of getting it through but I just can't figure it out.
It's a bit tricky to explain so I'll take a photo if what I've said isn't clear.
Any tips would be grousse!

the std mk1 antenna is a lock down antenna. you need to have something like the original "key" to insert in the slot on the side of the top nut to allow the antenna to pop up out of the lower housing.
you may be able to make a key for it out of some thick-ish sheet steel, like 1.2mm. it just needs to be shaped like a forked tongue... sortof.

Thanks gldgti, you got it in one. I ended up jamming it open with a jewellers screwdriver. Satisfaction achieved! I'm not sure what the point of the locking antenna is though.
Like my car, it has the housing but no antenna at all
You really would have to be a complete ass to extend the antenna and then break it though, if it was already down!
A mate of mine recommended moving the whole antenna so that water didn't leak in to the passenger floor pan via the antenna cable, but I figure that if I just give the cable a little more slack so it loops down before entering the car, the water should just drip off it.
