So Marty finally gets the chance to clear out some of the stuff he's been collecting over the years?

Are either of you coming down to Canberra for the All German Day this Sunday? I'd like to pick your brains and talk 16v in MK1's.

    Cheers

    Paul

That's great news. Look out for the old guy with the grey hair and the equally old looking MK2.

Engine is in. Change of plans as Marty is keeping the 2.0 block for another project and has gone with the 1.8 8v block, but bored and stroked to 1984 cc. Note custom engine mount, alternator mount, and cable shift bracket

    What intake manifold is that?

Might have to get one to replace the way-too-short one I have. I like torque and power down low.

The intake manifold was just off eBay motors, I don't know what brand though it's the long runner style with better flow than the short runner alternatives. The distributer has been machined down 39 mm in height and modified with adjustable mechanical advance, with a saab dissy cap that has 90 degree terminals for clearance below the intake manifold. Why didn't you run the dizzy off the head like a normal KR engine? That's where I plan on running mine and with the same mods you've done to your dizzy - adjustable mechanical advance and electronic ignition.

How hard was it converting the 8v block to a 16v head and why start with a 1.8 block? Wouldn't it have been cheaper to convert a 2.0 block?

I ran the dizzy in the original position to run the oil pump instead of sourcing a 16v pump as they are different with the 16v pump having the gear attached to it instead of the dizzy. The 8v dizzy also has the advance mechanism inside although the 16v has a direct drive with no advance mechanism meaning you need to use an aftermarket computer or use the factory computer for the ignition advance curve.

The 16 v head bolts directly to an 8 v block with the only issue being a dowel on the gearbox end of the block requiring removal. The bigger issue is clearancing the 8 v block for the 92.8 mm stroke crankshaft. This required die grinding the block to clear the rods ands machining the intermediate shaft.

you sure can from what i have heard although i have not checked out a 2E block before so check a head gasket from the 2E on the abf head and make sure everything aligns up especially oil galleries.
