Rear disc brakes - piston wind back tool

Rear brake piston wind back tools - what a minefield.

Seemed a waste to pay$30 to $300 for a tool that gets used once every several years.

So I ended up with a <$15 Toledo brake piston cube from Total Tools. Doesn’t quite fit out of the box but a little reengineering and it worked fine.

Plenty of brands offering the cube that appears a copy of Lisle 28600. Mostly selling for $20-40.

But even Lisle won’t tell what cars or calipers it fits - mostly USA brands and some imports.

Toledo says its tool is aluminium, but it is rather heavy and magnetic! Looks to be cast stainless steel. Aliexpress models say carbon steel — if so must be plated to stay shiny. Will know more when it rusts.

The four prong side is closest for Polo 6R/C rear brake pistons. Have to cut or grind off two of the house shaped prongs. Could be made to fit better with more grinding of height and inner bevel. But at least it has flat sided prongs compared to nearly all the generic kits that have round prongs.

Heresy! Quality tools are never a waste of money

The toledo one is probably just cast steel, electroplated with zinc. Pretty common manufacturing method.
    Cheers

If i need a better tool, one with 3/8” drive that takes a specific disc would be my quality choice. https://m.aliexpress.com/item/100500...2214b6a&gclid=

But one of these for vw would be enough...

The Toledo cube is made in Taiwan.

Monotaro sells one similar made of chrome moly steel. So I suspect the Toledo one is chrome moly too.

Lisle, SnapOn, Beta are flogging the chinese generic kits.

KTC Japan makes 3 double sided discs that fit 6 different styles and lists brands they are supposed to fit. ABX104 fits VW and Audi.
