Dynolicious

That YouTube link presents quite a compelling case.

Dynolicious (and its ilk) has an advantage over GTech and similar accelerometer tools in that it includes a GPS, which must be much more accurate than I thought. I wonder if it also does its thing through cellular tower triangulation :?

For those who would like to inform themselves about drivetrain loss on dynos, there's an excellent "hot hatch" comparo in the latest "Tarmac" mag, which presents some interesting data

Mfr Fly rated to dyno measured losses for the following cars

Mazda3 MPS 190Kw 153Kw 19% loss
HSV VXR Nurb'g 177 146 18%
Golf GTI Pirl'i 169 144 17%
Focus XR5 166 140 13%
MCS JCW 155 136 12%
RenSport Clio 145 110 24% (so THAT's why it feels so gutless :nana:)

Also some interesting points on heat soak, air filters, water sprays etc

I think that Dynolicious doesn't make use of the gps on the iphone. I think its purely based on the accelerometer. It would be interesting if they come up with one that makes use of the GPS to from maybe track timing. That would be interesting for a phone application.

And fuel for pointless forum arguments.

For GPS based performance gathering to work accurately your GPS receiver has to have a high sample rate. Alot of the phone based ones are only 1HZ.

I guess thats prolly why they didn't include it in the first place. But wouldn't dead reckoning solve that problem if they make use of the accelerometer? I think we will be seeing a lot of development in that area. Every day i get more and more fascinated a impressed at the rate technology evolves. Last time i heard of an accelerometer was in high school physics and u could only find it in a lab.....now i got one in my bloody phone :biggrin:

I think you will find most of the magazines use GPS assisted timing gear. Considerable more expensive than you or I would pay though

Yeah and thats the beauty of those softwares that make use of available hardware on available devices like phones and so on. I found it quite hard to buy Dynolicious @ $15 and i definitely would not pay any more than that for anything similar. But in general I'm happy that there are people out there thinking and making use of available technology in ways big companies don't bother to venture in.

and btw. First downside of Dynolicious: I can't find anywhere to test it :biggrin:
