cool. I understand..keep in mind though that even without the flywheel its still a pretty major gearbox out job that wont change the labour cost by much. I'm hearing you re the rear seat access with kids. Mine are now 4 and 7 and its only just gotten to the stage where they can climb in and buckle up themselves. Pain in the arse until then for sure.

They come apart pretty easy, only around 4hrs to do the whole job.

Please inspect the timing belt at least. A stripped tooth or two will write off the engine.
Like I said above, driving it with a slipping clutch is gon8ng to have over heated the flywheel and it's probably got heat spots all over it and could also be warped. I get your point about the next 30k but pulling it apart twice won't be fun either.

a bit of closure if anyone is interested

I got the right part (phew) - valeo 826488. About 260 delivered off ebayUK. Took ages to confirm it was the right part because my car is late 2005 manufacture/MY06 shape so it got a lot of random 2001 golf engine parts that aren't associated with polo gtis on the 'part lookup by car' filters on most websites.

install was 500 inc new gearbox juice
so got it in under my 800 budget

The car drives much better, actually stalled it on the way out of the workshop carpark because the clutch was engaging haha. The clutch feel is also much smoother/springier/easier. Feels like a different car that i've had to relearn to drive it.

hopefully it does last the 30-40K I need it to and something new doesn't break/fall off :O
