Im in the Provinces and tried to buy through Essendon(disorganised),Barlowworld Moorabbin (a bit shifty),Sth Yarra- where i bought (combination). I think Burwin FTG has won consisitent Vw awards and customer satisfaction so if i was in the market to buy i would definately not rule out a dealer by distance for purchase. For service however i would definately stay independent!

Over the past few years I have dealt with Barloworld Moorabbin and Glen Waverley, Werribee, South Yarra, Peninsula VW and Burwin and I would rate them as follows:
Service - Burwin best by far, then Barloworld Glen Waverley
Sales - Barloworld Glen Waverley closely followed by Burwin.
Barloworld have looked after us with our Passat in 2010 and with the purchase of the new 103tdi golf. They accomodated with the change of heart with the 118tsi. Their pricing was not matched by the others.
VW Camberwell left a bunch of things loose after a 100,000k service, resulting in a massive turbo leak and was like driving in valet mode, not going back there again.
Having been posted around most of Australia, I've had experiences with a number of Volkswagen dealerships and specialist Volkswagen repairers. What you get at Volkswagen dealerships can vary quite a bit - I've had some shockers, and some good (sometimes at the same dealership). For servicing, I've found specialist non-dealership repairers generally more reliable - they've usually been around for a while, relying on mostly word of mouth recommendations.
In terms of buying, was pretty impressed by Dale at Massaro Volkswagen - he did something smart no other dealer has ever done for me (saved me $$$), and seems pretty genuine (although the principal dealer seems less than fantastic), although they ain't in Melbourne.

watch out for any barloworld frenchiese there dodgy..
I just purchased my new Golf R from Bayford VW Epping (despite seeing a post on hereford an unhappy customer) mainly because they had both a manual and dsg option of the car I wanted. They were extremely helpful, allowing me to drive a brand new, non demo manual. They also were negotiable on price, knocking $5k off. They have a service centre in Doncaster and have a fixed price service cost, $420 for 15k which after a 7.5% discount comes under $400 and includes a loan car.
By comparison, I was in at Barloworld GW yesterday buying some parts and asked service how much for the $15k. "Around $480" I was told.
Will also ask Burwin as they are my closest dealer and obviously good feedback, but ultimately I think it comes down to the price and relationship you can create with your dealer
