Is your Mk6 a DSG or manual?

Chose the manual because (in no particular order)

a) like driving a manual
b) rarely in heavy traffic
c) cheaper
d) slight concern, perhaps misguided, about longer term reliability of DSG, and some reports around jerkiness
e) we get older every day so eventually auto/DSG may be the more sensible option - but not yet:)

With regard to the jerkiness, I find that the DSG improves on a manual in that regard but is not as smooth as a torque converter auto. That's what most testers are comparing it to when they say it is jerky.

But with a torque converter auto, you also get the poor response and fuel economy. I think the DSG is a good compromise, as someone who likes the response and "feel" of a manual, but can't be bothered anymore in traffic. People who truly prefer automatics probably wouldn't like it.

I chose manual because:

- I enjoy feeling more in control of when gears change and how they change.
- I'd heard about/ seen issues with the DSG box
- I'd driven a DSG R32 where the lag between planting of the foot and actual take-off was incredibly noticeable.
- I like the look of the manual gear stick
- I enjoy playing with the gear stick (no sexual connotations)
- I think that given the GTI is a sports car that it should be a manual (some may disagree but that's the beauty of freedom of opinion)
- It makes it harder for other people to use as a lot of my friends drive autos

Thanks for your comments on DSG. When the next new car comes along:banana: , and I am older and lazier:( , I will certainly look at that option again.

DSG. As my wife drives the car too, it was decided that this was the better option. I've owned many manual cars and I have no problems whatsoever with the good old stick shift. However, I must say that this Golf DSG is one of sweetest boxes you could ever hope to experience!

I have no issues with "jerkiness" except when my missus expresses her views on my retorts in arguements :)

You have to get used to the DSG in the same way you do a manual, when you first drive a manual you get the gear timing wrong and the passengers are bounced around and as you get used to it you smooth the gears in and get the timing right. the DSG is exactly the same, I notice if i let my mates drive it I get jerked around all over the place, between the erratic application of the accelerator , the turbo and the DSG it makes for a terrible drive.

I unconsciously know when and how to apply the accelerator to smooth in the DSG both up and down the gears. This took several months after taking delivery and then again after I had the tune.

Spot on, I have no problems with the DSG being jerky, not in my previous Jetta and not in my current EOS. Having said that, because you essentially control the transmission with your right foot and there is no power sapping torque converter that by its very design cushions sudden throttle movements, you find it becomes second nature to apply throttle smoothly. My DSG is as smooth as any conventional auto and is superior in every way to a conventional auto.

All my car purchases so far have been 'heart' decisions, not head decisions... and i knew i wanted a DSG GTI when one day, driving my Subaru around, i was second in the queue at a red light behind a Mk5 GTI. The way he took off quicker than a blink, and his exhaust made that beautiful 'blat' between 2nd and 3rd... i'd decided. Six months later...

Good thing you weren't behind a Lamborghini ;)
