Why you need to use 504/507 oils in FSI/TSI/TDI engines!

Thread was cleaned from off topic conversations, so DO NOT POST! Anything what is not closely related to why you need to use VW504/507 oils question.

I don't know. Just get Shell or Penrite VW504.00/507.00 oil. Even the dealers are now selling imported oil that cost a heaps more and doesn't say what brand it is.

CASTROL SLX PROFESSIONAL POWERFLOW LONGLIFE III is only available from the Dealer, @ about $120 in Adelaide. Used to be much cheaper until VW determined that is was best to have it imported from the Fatherland.
Pentrite Oil was $95 at Auto Pro in my local S/C.

Obviously, using 504/507 oils won't stop deposit formation, but as shown by Lubrizol and Auto Bild, you can at least decrease the amount of deposit formation. To me it appears less severe compared to the photos that users are posting on other forums, considering the mileage (100,000 km) of these engines.

From an engineers point may I make a comment that picture 15 of 24 is probably the cause of the problem - not the other way around. (that is if I am allowed to post after my self imposed exile after being threatened with an infraction LOL)

The scores in the bore may have caused "blowby" (excess crankcase pressure) which the PCV could not cope with thus allowing the build up in the valve region and inlet.


There is also the problem with direct injection engines that the fuel washes the lubricant off the cylinder walls. The micro cross hatch pattern is there to hold oil for ring lubrication. Can cause premature wear or rings not bedding in correctly. I would like to see what the rings look like before making a firm judgement.

Also the oils are designed for longlife 15,000 kilometre intervals. I haven't done much research on these oils (they were not common when I was teaching) but as far as I am concerned the "Jury is still out". I have reams of paperwork research on oils that I have collected over the last 30 years. (just to answer apprentices questions)

Penrite Enviro 5-30W is $75 at Supercheap Qld, bought it yesterday. If you are anywhere near Transporter, get it from him. Stuff paying $120 for any oil!

No.

They are both approved oils and should perform equally. Penrite is usually cheaper.

Saw 10 litres of Nulon '5W30 Euro Diesel' in Autobarn today for $165 that claims to meet VW's 504.0 and 507.0 spec. My first experience with Nulon products were with the somewhat controversial teflon based oil additives they were pushing 20 years ago. Has anyone here had experience with their engine oil products?

By claiming their oil meets 504/507, Nulon is implying that it will pass all the required tests, but until they submit their formulation to VW for verification (and hence approval upon passing) you'll have to take their word for it.

Then again, it apparently costs $2k to gain VW approval. And after two or three years, you need to apply for a renewal if want to stay on VW's approval list (that's another $2k) so Nulon may feel such a cost isn't warranted for them.


EDIT - I might add, I don't think their engine oils are dodgy or anything (though I say this without any experience), it's just that without a VW approval, they just aren't on the radar for owners of modern VW vehicles.
