I think you should check that.... in NSW the RTA havea list of low powered turbocharged cars that are P Plater certified.

Examples of moderate performance turbo/supercharged vehicles that are eligible for exemption include:
    • Audi 1390cc A3
    • Audi 1798cc A3 and A4
    • Audi 1984cc Q5
    • Citroen 1598cc C4 1.6L
    • Fiat 1368cc, Punto and Rimto
    • Mercedes-Benz 1796cc CLK200K, E200K, C200, CLC200, C230 and SLK 200K
    • Peugeot 1598cc 308 Series 1.6T XSE
    • Saab 1988cc 9-3 Linear, and Vector
    • Skoda 1798cc Superb 1.8 TFSI and Octavia 1.8 TFSI
    • Volkswagen 1390cc Golf 90TSI and Golf 118TSI
    • Volkswagen 1984cc Tiguan 125TSI and Passat 147TSI

I stand corrected. I was basing my assumption on a recent SMH article stating the problem confronting P-platers. Perhaps the RTA has made the concession recently.

    Edit:
    I found the link

Trouble is, it's still a prohibited vehicle and you have to apply for an exemption. We haven't tried as we have other vehicles our P Plater son can drive (it also keeps the green slip price down on the 118TSI).

Why cheapen the Golf? I look more on our 118TSI as an A3 for less money. It seems like Volkswagen is trying to turn it into a Corolla. If I was putting down $60k for a Golf R I would not be amused to see a car that looks almost the same for 1/3rd the price.

Bah... 1/3 the price, but, > 3 times the fun!

Is that what BMW M3 drivers think? Or AMG C63 drivers? Probably not.

If VW can sell a less expensive version of the Golf why shouldn't it? It gets more people into a VW who will hopefully then trade up to a more expensive model in the future.

I had a Golf R on order... Now canned that... I would not pay $60k+ for a Corolla, no chance in hell! So same principle applies to the Golf. Loses the appeal and the niche of a quality euro brand.

Even if you were a mechanic and knew how to customise these things.. For $40k over the base car, you could exceed the performance and look of the Golf R without much trouble!!

This is a different argument to M3 and AMG models.. These are premium prices at starting base models. Having the Golf now sit side by side with the Corolla, this is a mass market, all in, sales grab. The car won't be anything special and that will most certainly put downward pressure on all Golf models come trade in.

There are so many great cars coming out over next 12 months, I am more inclined to look elsewhere now. The Range Rover Evoque is right up my alley... That will be money well spent.

Oops! guess I over stimulated the debate.

The bottom line is VW's bottom line, after all. I can see by getting back into mass market cars, the world's no 2 carmaker (by volume) can only increase sales in Australia.

PhillipVWDealer makes a valid point also, that by becoming a bigger slice of the VW pie, we may get cars here quicker (and hopefully more colours ).

The final word on brand recognition goes to my wife who said " there was a car that looked like mine (118TSI) in the carpark, only it had Gt something on the back..."

Mind you, there is a pink fairy hanging from the mirror so she can pick it from all the other black hatchbacks
