My Golf has developed a real lot of tyre noise in the last year. It is seriously loud, and starts at 50 kmh and gets louder in proportion to speed. At 100 kmh it is really loud.
Now i was sure it was the tyres just wearing out as they have done 40,000 kms , but i put on new tyres last week and the sound is still there.
It is not engine or transmission as putting the Golf into neutral and rolling does not change the sound.

I have tried swerving left and right, to load the wheel bearings, but there is no change to the sound when i do this.

The wheels are 17" Denver .

Any ideas ? I think i will have to take it to a mechanic unfortunately.
