There is a mod you can do that involves changing the struts. These struts are stronger than the stock ones and open the hatch when you hold the boot open button down.

A mod I'm planning to do myself.
Hi guys,
I'm new here so not sure if this had be discussed before. Got my new GTI for 2 weeks exactly today and
the back/boot door can be annoying. I love the VW logo to open the door but you have to lift the door
up high enough with the logo before you can put your other hand underneath the door and lift the door fully.
Once you open the rear door, and try to lift it up, the door is reasonable heavy compare most other cars.
need to lift the door to at least chest height before it will start to move upward. My old man has a passat
CC and the boot just open up with ease
what are your thoughts?

I can't recall trying to open the hatch on a Mk6, but it would seem odd if it was greatly different to the Mk5. On our 2006 built GTI once the opening with the badge is done the hatch pops enough that opening the hatch has never been a problem. I would expect the new car to work just the same way.
We have 2 hatches — current Yaris and MkVI TDI. The VW's hatch is by far the easier to open, despite that the door is much heavier.
I just click the badge upwards, apply about enough force to lift maybe a kilogram and the hatch swings all the way up.
Certainly don't need any more counterbalance on it — closing is even easier.
I'm with idle. The hatch opens easily on the 118TSI. If anything, I have to be careful to close it fully.

I must admit, I don't find it hard at all EWT. Maybe one of your strutts has last some of it's compression or something?
mine is fine as well... u just give it a slight push and it goes up in no time

I did the mod where the struts are replaced with stronger ones, and it works great. Highly recommend it. Never have to lift the tailgate (or rear boot for those that only speak english....) again. Do it!
Asked VW about these struts- Not available in Aus market. WTF??? Looks like I'm sourcing them from the UK then!
Eh? I grab the handle (badge) and give it a quick yank and the boot opens straight up without issue.. no need to put much effort in to it? Work on your technique![]()
