Golf R vs Passat CC

A month ago I placed an order for a Golf R DSG 5 door for around $55k after corporate discount. The car will arrive sometime in January 2012. I've placed $1000 deposit at a dealer.

Ever since then I have been thinking if I had made the right choice. I know the R is a fantastic car but in the real world, I wouldn't be able to make use of its full potential. Yes, I might go to a track once or twice a year but that's about it. On public roads, I can't race.

That made me re-think. Is Passat CC V6 a better car for me? It's a pretty big car. I've seen it before. It's very nice. Very sexy. It can do 0-100 in 5.6sec. Same time as a Golf R. It's got everything. Leather seats, Park assist, big wheels, ACC, etc.

I would like to hear especially from those who owned these 2 cars. Did you regret buying the Golf R and then ended up buying a CC?

I would buy a used CC for around $55k.

i was actually looking at trading in my Golf R for a CC for the exact same reason as u have pointed out, as well as other reasons I had of my own.

If I could do it again, I'd buy a PAssat CC V6. Not saying the Golf R isnt a good car. It is. Very capable of doing the daily. But its also a personal thing for me. Ive always had saloons and the Golf is my first hatchback car. After having one now, I'm not going back to a hatchback ever again. Plus trading it in for a Passat CC V6 without having to pay more on top would mean I would have to settle for an older version of the CC...MY09 perhaps. But i've decided that it's too late now and I've already started tinkering and modding the R so might as well make it the best I can make it for myself which will be both enjoyable and fun.

But its also a trade off. I do a lot of daily driving so fuel economy was important to me. V6 CC will put strain on my already strained wallet

My father has a CC V6, which I've driven extensively, and I have a well specced GTI. (And I've also driven the R.)

The CC is a great car, no question, but the driving experience is quite different to the Golf. It's a much larger car, and feels much less agile overall; despite a great driving position and cockpit orientation I still find it slightly too large overall to be as enjoyable drive as the Golf, either in the twisties or in traffic. Having said that, I prefer smaller cars (last car was a CL9 Accord Euro, and that was big enough for me).

It certainly doesn't feel as quick as the GTI in traffic or point to point, although the GTI (with the smaller K03 turbo) does feel very nippy so the R may be closer to the CC in this respect. There's no question it's a properly quick car - there's more than enough power and torque to move you along comfortably fast - but the sound isolation and overall refinement are so good (at the pricepoint) that it doesn't always feel fast. It'd be easy to get booked without vigilant reliance on the speedo and cruise control.

Of course all the obvious points apply - the CC feels better built, and some of the materials (not all mind you) are of a higher quality. The Nappa leather is beautiful - much more supple than the Vienna in the Golf. Dash plastics feel about the same. Much of the instrumentation and electronic devices are shared between the two. Jumping from one to another is very easy given how much they share in this respect.

If your daily drive route involves lots of inner city traffic or other tight spaces, I'd stick with the Golf. On wider roads or longer trips, the CC is a clear winner. If you only like having a go once in a while, and won't push beyond 8/10ths, like a larger car and enjoy the refinement and isolation, you won't regret the CC.

Mate! As Corey eludes - it sounds like you are looking for a car like the CC. You are right in your match I would say. The powerful yet smooth and comfy CC is going to satisfy your needs better than a fast, zippy and stiffer R or GTI. Go for it, just change your order.
