I don't think that many people buy them to be honest.

First is the fact that you only save 0.4L/100km in fuel (7.5%), but give up 26kW and 80Nm (25% each) vs the 103TDI.

Next is that they're only $4500 cheaper than the 103TDI. BUT, it's a Trendline vs a Comfortline. To add the 'Comfort' package you're talking $2200 which halves that price gap. The comfort package adds:
Allow Wheels 15" Wellington (instead of steel wheels with hubcabs!)
    Automatic dimming interior rear-view mirror
    Cruise Control
Dual Zone Climate Control Air Conditioning.
    Foot well illumination
    Gearshift knob in leather
    Leather trimmed Multi-Function Steering wheel
    Multi-Function Display Plus
Automatic Headlights with Coming/Leaving Home Function
    Rain sensing Windscreen wipers

Other things you miss with the 77TDI are:
    Radiator Grille highlights in Chrome
    Anti-theft wheel bolts
Rear seat centre armest with load through provision
'Black Pyramid' insert trim (instead of 'Titanium')
    Rear Passenger Reading lights
    Shopping Bag hooks (in boot)
Storage box in side lining (in boot)
    12 volt socket (in boot)
    Comfort Front seats
Height adjustment for front passenger seats
    Front seat backrest storage pockets
Better 6 speed 'wet clutch' DSG (instead of newer 'dry clutch' 7 speed DSG)
    'Sports Package' not available

I don't know, but I think that all of that is well worth the other $2300 different in price, excluding the performance advantage of the 103TDI.

So all in all, unless you're desperately short of cash, I'm not sure why you would get the 77TDI instead of the 103TDI because $4500 additional is a bargain for all the extra equipment you're getting, and in reality, after negotation, the drive away prices are probably far less than $4500 difference.

Just my opinion, but hope that helps

    I looked at a 77TDI, but ended up buying a 103TDI DSG.

The performance difference was just too great, with marginal fuel savings.

Add in the Comfortline/Trendline differences (above), & it will make up your mind for you.

Whats the difference in price between the Golf and Jetta 77tdi
You might get a cheaper Jetta with all there standards over the cheaper Golf standards.
    Gee hope that makes sense.

There's only $300 difference between the Golf and Jetta 77TDIs. Although the Jetta 77TDI does have more standard features than the Golf, it is still missing many of the Comfortline features. PLUS, it's a 'MKV' instead of a MK6. So...

If your looking at the Golf 77TDI then considering the Jetta 77TDI makes alot of sense. As Coreying stated only $300 more and you get:

    Alloy Wheels
    Front & Rear Parking Sensors
    Multi Function Leather Steering Wheel
Mark 6 style Re-designed interior and a few more bits and pieces that I can't think of off the top of my head.

Obviously the Jetta is aimed at a different market but it's a lot of car for your money and if you need the space it's well worth looking at.

77TDI looks poor value. The base 90TSI seems better value for money

Hmmm.... I'd disagree. There is still only a $4500 difference in price between the 90TSI Trendline and 118TSI Comfortline. You still are missing all the same things that I listed in my post above that you'd get from upgrading to the 118TSI Comfortline (except the better 6sp DSG of the 103TDI Comfortline).

The only difference is that since the Petrol models are $2700 cheaper than the Diesel models, that $4500 is a greater % of the total cost.

I meant that the 90TSI and 77TDI give similar performance (though the 90tsi is faster) and both are economical. You could get a 90TSI with comfort pack for the price of the 77TDI and have a few $100 in the bank for fuel.
