Dear Scarlet
Unlike the Europeans, most Australian VW buyers purchase autos. But there also seems to be disproportionately more people with:
- VW autos (especially DSG) who wished they'd bought the manual (rather than the other way around);
- VW autos (especially DSG) with issues compared with problems with the tried, proven and, let's face it, driver-oriented manual.
Some people of course find changing gears with a clutch a chore. If you don't, then it is hard to see why you would spend the extra money on the self-shifter to be a few hundredths of a second quicker between gear changes unless the world driver's championship depended on it (lol).
Hope that helps.

I chose what type of transmission looking at it simply. Do I want Manual or Auto. The handful of reasons for me choosing Auto (DSG) came down to what was going to suit me best and not what others think is the better of the two. There are merits for both and I've had both. For me I kinda get the best of both to some extent albeit no third pedal.
So far I've had no issues with the dsg and I don't regret my choice. I didn't option dsg to be quicker by a few hundredths of a second.
Since when do you need statistical evidence to support an opinion on this forum?
Darth's comments are not far of the mark.
You don't hear many people on this forum saying dammit I should have got the DSG, but you do hear the odd person wishing they'd got a manual when they start having problems with their DSG. Lets face it, the number of people on this forum who report issues with their DSG far outweighs those with a manual.
It's a Golf.
It will have problems.
Nature of the beast, irrespective of the transmission.
If you want trouble free motoring buy a fridge on wheels.
Personally, DSG, like the GTI/R, was the the all rounder I wanted.
Hey Darth, don't PM me with crap. Want to make comment about my previous post then comment out in the open.
My reasons for what I choose are my reasons. I don't need to defend why I chose what I've got to anyone. This rubbish how we must justify and defend our choices is primary school stuff. Opinions are great but just that, opinions.
Can't we all have different views and still be courteous and refrain from unkind comments? It would be a pretty boring situation if we all drove identical cars!
As you wish. But get a grip, mate: my post above was merely my 2 cents worth intended for the person who was asking which transmission to choose. You seem to have taken offence that someone would dare voice an opinion you possibly do not share.
I gather you feel that my post was a call for you to defend your transmission choice when it merely pointed out a couple of apparent downsides of DSG.
I just not understand the point of your post, with insights such as: "First I asked myself do I want manual or Auto?". And you think I'm "primary school"?
It would have been more enlightening perhaps if you had shared why you chose DSG rather than telling us two factors that had no bearing on your decision:
- quicker gear changes;
- what other people think (as if that needed to be said).
My view is that DSG misses out on two of the most important benefits of the manual - very high levels of reliability and driver involvement - perhaps the reason the just-released 1M BMW coupe only comes in a 6-speed manual.
Don't message me either Darth
Sheesh, why did you bother
