Hey guys, If anyone knows, or owns a GOLF R, can they tell me if its tru that the gearbox automatically upshifts gears now when it hits redline/fuelcut out?
I know the GTI stays in gear which is great I think. I hope the R does the same, or at least can be changed.
I am referring to sports mode as I dont mind what It does in the other modes.

In my GTI while using S the needle goes well into the red before it upshifts.

Yeah - I'm not sure you'd want to change this to be honest. As elisiX said, it will go into the redline before it changes.
I know that some of the tuners can raise the shifting point, but this is only performed in response to upgrading of engine internals, as well as the usual Stage III upgrades (turbo, intercooler, intake, pipes, headers, exhaust, etc)
I dont know how true this is, but apparently the R has some upgraded internals already which might help (im thinking like when the STI in the 2.0L motor had forged pistons and could handle a lot more than the WRX).
But yeah its not so much the rev limit i want increased (but damn Ill take it!), its the fact that it automatically upshifts losing that manual feel that I want to correct

Yes, the R already has upgraded internals over the GTI.
But yeah - if it didn't upshift, then it'd just be bouncing off a rev limiter anyway... if you're worried about being able to hold it at or near the red line around long sweeping corners etc, then don't be, you can do that fine in manual mode.
Changing gears in the red isn't really the fastest point to shift anyway is it?
Sports mode seems to hold it a bit too long up top IMO.
it does up shifting. Just went for test drive the R yesterday...very nice car and well priced.
But i'd say it wont really be an iusse to stay in same gear as long as not rev over the Redline.
that's out of the max torque zone anyway. just take some time to learn the throttle. u will be fine.
