Adding options later?

Personally I would do it. But I love performance more than gizmo. And I think there would be a lot of people who think like that, but then there obviously people who prefer the loaded option.

To me, at resale time, a base R will be a base R, worth a certain (descent?) amount. Whereas you can option up a GTI to be a solid $55k on road etc, but when you go to sell it, itwill always be a $40k car with a heap of options. Even bigger loss.

Also the R comes with XENONS standard and front and rear parking sensors with visual warning also built in stock, those led tails and then you get all the performance.

That's all on a stock R, so I think you'll agree there is quite a case for picking up a stock R, if you can stretch to it.

Whilst I agree with REXman and the guys who say that there will be people who take a base model GTI or R over a heavily optioned 118TSI or GTI respectively, I also agree with what Maverick is saying.

I honestly believe that if someone is of the intelligence level to investigate the purchase of a Golf, and then come here and check with advice on the forums before laying down their cash, that they're already aware of the base prices of the other cars and have made a conscious decision about the model of car and options that they want. So someone saying "you could get the base next model up for that" every single time someone comes on here and asks a question about an optioned car, isn't quite that helpful :)

The missus was a bit disappointed that the Polo didn't have rear ones. If they can be done without looking like a hack job, I'll get it done as well.

But the Op has come in saying they're already struggling to stretch the current model and options. Going upto an R just makes it even worse and then reduces their preferred equipment level again.

Hey Dave,
heres the link to the sensors, they are a Motorone product, fitted via dealership pre-delivery
Front & Rear Parking Distance Sensors | Vehicle Electronics from MotorOne

They dont look like the ones fitted to the SUV in this link though - not keen on that look, mine sit flush with both
front & rear bumpers, not overly large and dont look out of place IMO.

On topic - due to the integration with the MFD and the steering for the Park Assist to work, I very much doubt it can be installed aftermarket.

It could but you need deep pockets and a VW dealer won't take any part in the install or configuration.

Life's a compromise, Maverick.

So the answer is: For the same reason someone might choose a GTI over a similarly-priced TSI or a GTD over a similarly-priced TDI.

That is, because upon reflection they prefer the better performance and resale value of the higher model to the various options on the lower model (which tend not to retain their value as well).

Not a concept so foreign as to warrant such apparent mystification whenever someone floats it, is it?

So just as some people would forsake performance for creature comforts, others might do it the other way around, even if at first they were only considering the lower model, in which case the reminder of the relative cost of the model above could be timely and helpful indeed.
