    2011 MK6 Golf rough idle. (118TSI) 103,000kms

    Hi guys,

    Have just purchased my first golf so I'm new to these forums.

    Only had the car for 2-3 months and was purchased for my partner.

    Afew weeks ago the engine light came on. We were an hr from home but the car still ran fine, so we continued the drive home. I have an OBDII sensor and was watching the readout while the missus was driving, everything SEEMED ok.

    Afew days later we went on a holiday and left the car in the driveway for 2 weeks. When we got back and started it..... I wish we hadn't. The noise from the engine sounded like a rough diesel truck.

    Called the mechanic and had it towed there.
    Upon inspection he said there was a timing chain code and he thinks the chain has skipped a tooth.

    He wants to get in there and replace the chain, tensioner and full 100k service for 2.5k.

    Does that sound like a reasonable amount?
    And if this is the case with the engine, does it look like the damage is already done and mine is also going to be one of the golf with a damn blown piston valves etc...
    The mechanic said it's running ok now even tho all he has done is clear the codes, and to drive it around for afew days and see how it drives.

    Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

    We just found out were expecting our first child and this car was meant to be a safe family car for us. Now to find out were up for a minimum of 2.5k really hurts.

    The previous owner looked after it/serviced it religiously so I thought we had purchased a reliable car. We've only put 5000kms on the clock so I'm starting to think the previous owner knew what was happening to the car and offloaded it.
    Extremely pissed as they were also a young family and we got to talking for awhile and they knew our family plans yet still offloaded it to us knowing we were going to be expecting an 8k rebuild.

    I'm praying a rebuild isn't the case.



    P.S. I also just joined the shine lawyers case against VW for the chain and tensioner issue.


    EDIT: if service campaign 24S4 was initiated to update the ECM to re-calibrate the knock sensor due to - rough running, misfiring and piston failure.

    Isn't this just a sign that they knew the tensioner was an issue? I.e. tensioner fails, causes the above mentioned problems, knock sensor goes off - engine light goes off. Go to mechanic, engines already got compression leaks due to failed pistons, valves etc

    Is your mechanic a Volkswagen/Audi specialist, or a generalist mechanic?

    If it happened all of a sudden as you have mentioned then it is quite likely to be a timing issue. So likely that the timing chain tensioner has failed and the timing chain has skipped and now the timing is out.

    If this is the case, then there is really no way the previous owner (or you) could have known it was going to happen....it just happens.
