• THE NEW OCTAVIA SCOUT 4x4 MODEL RANGE

The versatile Škoda Octavia Scout 4x4 is becoming even more attractive. The Octavia Scout 4x4 is broadening its range and now includes the highly-efficient DSG transmission and a top-of-the-range premium model.

Fuel efficiency, comfort, versatility and affordability have finally culminated in the form of the Octavia Scout 4x4 with DSG transmission. Now available with an attractive drivetrain package which combines the economical 103TDI engine with an automatic, twin-clutch, six-speed DSG transmission, a clever all-wheel drive system, and an extensive list of standard features, the Octavia Scout 4x4 truly appeals to the buyer looking for the best all-round package.

The highly-innovative DSG gearbox is characterised by maximum economy and gear-shifting dynamics. The DSG transmission can operate in two modes – fully automated and manual Tiptronic. In both modes, shifts are executed extremely efficiently with none of the performance loss usually experienced with traditional automatics. The driver can also select between economy or sports mode. In sports mode the transmission changes gear at higher engine speeds, helping to maximise power output and therefore acceleration. In economy mode the transmission changes at lower engine speeds, resulting in lower fuel consumption.

Standard safety features on the Octavia Scout 4x4 include six airbags and ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) including ABS, EBD, ASR and Hill Hold Control. The all-wheel drive system, Škoda’s fourth-generation Haldex clutch, represents the best in modern all-wheel drive technology. It works with other onboard electronic systems and has an exceptionally fast response time.

Setting a new benchmark in refinement is the new Octavia Scout 4x4 Premium model. This model is for those buyers looking for the best all-rounder, but with a little more luxury. On top of the generous standard equipment range, which includes ‘Columbus’ satellite navigation on the standard Octavia Scout 4x4, the distinguishing exterior features for the Octavia Scout 4x4 Premium are electric glass sunroof, privacy glass from B-pillar, and ‘Proteus’ 17” polished alloy wheels. New interior features include Alcantara leather appointed upholstery and electric driver’s seat with memory.

“We are excited to offer what we believe is the best all-round package in this segment”, said Matthew Wiesner, Head of Škoda Australia.

“With the new DSG transmission and Premium model additions, we are able to offer a unique package which appeals to a wider audience”.

    DESIGN AND DIMENSIONS

As with the standard Octavia, Scout drivers benefit from a large, comfortable and well-appointed cabin. The four-spoke multifunction steering wheel, gearlever and handbrake are trimmed in leather. Special seat fabric and a grab handle on the dashboard ahead of the passenger seat are other unique features.

In terms of appearance, the Octavia Scout 4x4 features a host of styling additions designed to be both functional and eye-catching. Big bumpers at the front and rear, moulded side protective strips and profiled door sills give the Scout a distinctive look and offer greater protection for the bodywork. Black roof rails reinforce the practical nature of the design, and the fitted foglights with corner function underline the vehicle’s off-road appearance.

The Octavia Scout 4x4’s solid looking 17” ‘Proteus’ alloy wheels (polished for the new Premium model) look rugged and hardwearing, and together with the unique Scout badging and polished double stainless steel exhaust tailpipes, complete the design package.

The Octavia Scout 4x4 is 4584mm long, 1784mm wide and is 1583mm high at 180mm ground clearance. Octavia Scout 4x4 models have modified springs which raise the ride height by 40mm over the standard Octavia Wagon.

The standard 580-litre luggage compartment can be increased to 1,620 litres by folding the split 60/40 rear seat backrests. There is also a load-through provision in the rear seat backs for transporting long items in the car.

A useful feature for securing items in the boot is a set of luggage nets. These nets ensure that the items do not move when driving.

    ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The Octavia Scout 4x4 comes with a diesel engine which delivers enough torque to compete with many V6 petrol engines. With 103kW of power at 4,200rpm and producing an enormous 320Nm from as low as 1,750rpm, the 103TDI engine delivers an exhilarating and satisfying drive. As part of 2011 model year changes, the 103TDI Octavia Scout 4x4 comes with the new common rail diesel engine.

Available with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG transmission, the diesel offers exceptional fuel economy. For both transmission variants the Scout consumes just 6.1 litres of diesel and CO2 emissions of 160 g/km per hundred kilometres (combined consumption ADR 81/02).

    SAFETY AND TECHNOLOGY

Standard safety features on the Octavia Scout 4x4 include six airbags and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) including ABS, EBD, ASR and Hill Hold Control. The all-wheel drive system for the Scout also offers a safer driving experience in all situations.

Featured on the Octavia Scout 4x4, Škoda’s fourth-generation Haldex clutch represents the best in modern all-wheel drive technology. It works with other onboard electronic systems and has an exceptionally fast response time.

The Haldex clutch is a compact unit located near the rear axle. It is based on a multi-segment clutch with discs in an oil bath. As the oil pressure in the box increases, the discs gradually close together, resulting in the transmission of torque to the rear wheels. The pressure in the box is generated by two axial piston pumps. However, they work only if the revolutions of the input and output shafts differ. Only then is transmission of torque to the rear axle needed. The system is controlled by a system of regulating valves via signals from an electronic control unit.

The electronic control unit evaluates all the necessary information such as wheel speed, accelerator pedal position, engine speed, and data from the chassis stability programmes. This information is received via the car’s CAN Bus and is used to regulate the value and development of the hydraulic pressure on the clutch discs. The clutch can vary the torque distribution ratio between the front and rear wheels from 98:2 up to 2:98.

When braking, the Haldex clutch automatically disconnects, to increase stability. If a sensor fails or the control unit receives questionable information, the clutch goes into a structured ‘emergency’ programme. If the signals from the wheel revolution sensors are interrupted, the clutch is deactivated for safety reasons and torque is transmitted to the front wheels only.

    COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE

As you would expect from a Škoda, the Octavia Scout 4x4 comes with a generous range of standard equipment including ‘Columbus’ satellite navigation, 17” ‘Proteus’ alloy wheels, heated front seats, dual-zone air conditioning, six airbags, rear acoustic parking sensors, cruise control, twin chrome exhausts and unique ‘Scout’ touches throughout the cabin.

The Premium model adds electric glass sunroof, privacy glass from B-pillar, and ‘Proteus’ 17” polished alloy wheels, Alcantara leather appointed upholstery, and electric driver’s seat with memory.
