View Full Version : QLD Lakeside Breakfast Laps - 12 October 2014

Please be aware that QLD Raceways does monitor the forum and as such, any posts regarding activities that breach the rules of the track/happy laps will be noted by the staff and you may be banned from the events.

Also please provide the colour, make and model of your car when requesting a spot so we can confirm who is out there.
I will then send you the payment details so we can have it all paid up and sorted on time.

Okay guys, round 28!
Lakeside Park again for breakfast ($35) which will be payable to me as i have to pre-pay to book the event for us now
The Breakfast starts at 7:30am sharp and we should be out on the track by 8:15am after a safety briefing at 8am.
Please be there by 7:15am.

Rules:
Note: This is not a dedicated track event. People have been warned previously about their driving conduct and, as a result, we have been pulled off early.
No protective gear allowed (i.e. no helmet or race suit). At a minimum, please wear shorts, t-shirt and closed-in shoes with a grippy sole.
No overtaking on corners, only on the straight. If a vehicle slows down and indicates that you overtake on the back section of the track, you may do so at your own discretion, however the responsibility is on the overtaking driver to do it safely. IF IN DOUBT, DO NOT OVERTAKE.
If you are not overtaking anyone on the main straight, please stay to the left of the track and let any driver that is consistently on your tail overtake you. You'll know this if you've been watching your mirrors. To be overtaken safely, maintain your speed and line. Do not brake or accelerate, just hold your line at a reasonable, steady speed to allow the overtaking driver to execute the manoeuvre safely. If you think you are actually quicker on the track, then you should be able to come up to that car again the next time you reach the main straight, and then the roles will be reversed: The original overtaking driver should now let the other car overtake.
All vehicles that enter must be road-worthy and registered.

Passengers are welcome, however anyone entering the track (drivers, passengers and those splitting the driving) must have a wristband, which means that track fees are payable by everyone in the car (but you get a delicious breakfast, which is BONUS!)

Please let me know if you have any food allergies/vegetarianism etc so i can see if they can source something suitable.
Menu:
Toast
Egg and Capsicum omlette
Crispy bacon
Gourmet chipolatas
Baked beans
Fried tomato
Mushrooms
Tea & coffee

I am having this open to forum contributors only and you must be in a Euro car. Anyone can come and passenger with you. I am capping the number at the first 35 attendees (drivers and/or passengers combined) to make the costs associated with the event still suitable while having a good number of cars to stop traffic problems out on the track.

When the main list is full, members will be added to the reserve list. If someone pulls out, the first person on the reserve list will be moved up to the main list. Unfortunately, if you do not make it on the main list, then we cannot accommodate your car at the event, but other members might be keen to have you passenger and/or drive with them. Any forum members remaining on the reserve list by the event date will be placed directly on the main list for the next event. Please check the next event details when they are posted to ensure that you can indeed attend if you are put on the main list.

Please post to indicate that you would like to attend with the colour, make and model of your vehicle and how many people you will be bringing with you. You can be anonymous on the forum but you cannot be anonymous on the track.

Directions for entry:
Drive across the causeway, then follow the road to the right around the back of the track, then enter the tunnel on your left. Turn right after exiting the tunnel toward the group parking on the grassy area in front of the big yellow building.

Thanks, Paul

The rain was actually good to see how the car behaves in a closed and secured circuit (risks of hitting a cow, oncoming cars, possums, etc.. are eliminated), in comparison to searching the limits on risky public roads.

I think everyone enjoyed it last week.

Agreed, was good to explore grips levels. I was one of the slowest/most cautious on the day and was surprised at the lateral grip levels. And when I pulled in to fix up the wiper, most cars were carrying really good pace down the straight and through the kink.

I won't make this one Clay, doing timeattack on saturday 11th.

No worries Sean.
Keen to see how you go a a proper event.

I agree with the comments about the wet event.
Everyone was more cautious around the corners but it was enjoyable and everyone played it safe.
I actually enjoy the wet weather ones more as it makes the pack a bit more even.

Well, everybody,

Guess who didn't actually die in surgery?
SKODA fiend and general pain in the back seat BrashDaniels is alive and sorta OK

Not up to hard driving just yet - but seeing as I am upright and breathing, I thought I might head up and take some shots just for the kicks.

I have lost 20kg since the illness that came on at the last Happy Laps I attended so I will be faster ;) :p when I finally make it back on the track - but not yet - I have scars pulling on my ribs that make it hard to steer with anything like 10/10ths

Looking to enter a Street Sprint round for the experience late this year or first thing next year.
In the meantime, it would be lovely to watch some others have a turn and listen to the "music"

No breakfast for us Clay - not eating real food for a little while yet.

Hey BD,

unsure if it's a democratic process or a "Which one of you plan to work" sort of arrangement…..But the Abarth is new to the stable, and I really want to have a bit of a play in it, but the little alfa is a lot more suited to the track and doesn't run out of breath when approaching that 100km/h Mark..…..First world problems! Either way, I don't think I could bring myself to take the Maserati round the track!

Basics matey, Oil, fuel, coolant, brake fluid etc……good idea to maybe let a few PSI out of your tyres, but once you are talking about that, you're more talking about sprints, this is just happy laps and speed limited to 100…..but just make sure everything is gravy and you'll be set!

Sort of what Coxy said.
Given it isn't sprints or a proper race, just check you have over half a tank of fuel, oil isn't low and make sure you have your tyres set to a suitable PSI (mine are at 42PSI for happy laps) so you can drive safely but still have fun.

I am heading out in 5 minutes, see you all soon-ish.

Huge Thanks to Clay for organising today!

Was a really enjoyable day aside from being pulled off the track for "Safety issues" Of which no one could tell me what they were. I apologise for what ever they were. I asked Doug and he said that I was going through the chicane too quickly even though I was doing the posted speed limit and staying in line with everyone else, what I can boil it down to, is he feels my car is a little too old to be out there with new cars and due to body roll it's unsafe……who knows, no one can tell me, but either way, thanks again all to a very enjoyable day!

Thanks to Clay for organising a great event. Obviously I would like to do more than 2 laps next time but I kinda knew that would happen, at least I have a bench mark for my coming improvements to steering and stopping. For those who are unaware I have a black turbo petrol Amarok which is plenty fast in a straight line and predictably woeful over rises/dips and around corners. At very moderate speeds traction control was having a field day, regardless great to see everyone out and enjoying themselves.

Thanks Clay for a great morning and as always thanks to my main man Wolfie for letting me aim his SLK at walls for half an hour!

Felt like I had a good run yesterday, definitely improved since the first time I took the car out a few months ago. Looking forward to the next one that we get out to.

Thanks everyone for playing nice and safe out there, Lakeside were kind enough to let us have 35 minutes due to our club's good reputation.
I tried to upload some in car footage last night but youtube apparently won't take files over 15 minutes for regular users.......

Keenly awaiting Rhys's photos and video (yellow DS3)

I think having the new chicane setup was really good too as it didn't bunch the cars up and let the traffic flow a lot smoother.

Also congrats to Keaton in the SLK, i followed you a few laps and you are definitely getting more comfortable behind the wheel of that beasty.

I am calling up now to find out when the next one can be held and will post the new thread at 6pm tonight.

Thanks again Clay for organising these! Everyone seemed to be really well behaved from my perspective. I only stayed on for about 20 minutes because my friend wanted to take some pictures from trackside. My miniscule 150hp is starting to show though on the front straight, thanks again to the people who slowed down a little for me to get past on the straight so I wasn't held up through the back of the track. The new chicane setup is SO much better and I believe it still slows down people enough to keep the event safe.

Sorry for taking a while to upload pictures and videos. Here is my onboard;

I think Dad said he got some video from trackside as well as pictures so I'll sort those out and upload some of the good ones tomorrow.

I was saying the same thing after this recent happy laps.
The group have now done a lot of these and we are getting familiar with proper/suitable driving lines and braking points which is good for maintaining a quick pace but it results in me sliding around in my seat through Karusel and Hungry.

Better bolstered seats (Recaro's etc) are a pricey upgrade though and require an engineering cert in QLD from memory which starts putting you into the realms of the sprint series rather than happy laps.

I will be retrofitting either the standard Sports seats(which incidentally are the same ones used on Golf Rs, just with a different cover) or the GT carbon buckets depending on how brave I am and if they are available at the time.

Was taking it a bit easier out there this time as wifey wanted me home safe after Bianchi's incident in the F1 and the motorbike incident at Lakeside 2 weeks ago.

Looking forward to some photos, will try to get someone lined up for the next one to do some dedicated sideline shots.

Yeah well, her bark is worse than her bite...!

I believe we discussed the APR supercharger kit previously but it is a significant upgrade ($32k) for what is already more than suitable for 95% of driving experiences in Australia.

Wolfman101
14-10-2014, 01:56 PM
It IS a significant power upgrade (and more like 40k fitted I believe), but at the end of the day, if a straight line monster was what I was after...I wouldn't have gotten an R8. I have come to terms with that I think, especially given that I'll be picking up something with really really HP in the not too distant future.
Really I just wanyed something that looks good, sounds good, is comfortable (all boxes already ticked by the SLK) but that has more performnce than I can use on the track, and won't kill me while I'm learning (NOT true of the SLK).

I know right.

Teasers below, album here; Happy Laps 12102014 Photos by THE_EGG7 | Photobucket (http://s1073.photobucket.com/user/THE_EGG7/library/Facebook/Happy%20Laps%2012102014)

If the images appear squished or not proportionate, the full image on photobucket will look normal.

Hopefully there are pictures of everyone (except those who have already requested me to not upload them). I'd also upload some trackside videos but they contain people who requested to not be in any trackside footage that was going to be uploaded.

Unfortunately it looks like photobucket's image quality has declined recently. It appears to be quite a bit more grainy.

From memory the plates aren't allowed to be covered when on track as it is happy laps.
We had a few people remove plates previously and were told to put them back on.

I have some time on the weekend (it is super hectic at uni and work atm) so I'll see about cutting out any parts that contain people that requested to not be in the video. The videos are a little blurry as far as 30 or 48fps video capture I think. I might try asking dad to reduce the quality to 720 or something to get a boost in fps next time.

Also if anyone has a Parrot drone or something similar (R/C helicopter with a video camera attached) I think that would make some pretty good content.

My Dad and myself found that it looks like the Lakeside guys have put up extra fencing around some parts of the track so unfortunately 2 photo spots Dad usually uses (near the bridge and hungry) are no longer usable.

I believe the fencing was up at our last happy laps becasue an evo went over the concrete barriers in the sprint series earlier that month.
Luckily they have the little photo booth on the exit of the karusel and you can go into the pit area/yellow tower to get some shots.

A UAV would be pretty awesome but they don't deal with strong winds that we would get being near the lake and would make it dangerous if it crashed into a car as speed.
Also the DJI Phantom 2 is like $1500 here and wouldn't last the session.

I believe there is a few companies in teh US that are using a UAV linked to a gps transponder so that it will automatically follow you.
The presumption is that you can then have it filming while snowboarding etc and not have to worry about a pole or a camera-man

You're right, there were 2 or 3 kickstarter projects on a while ago, you wear a wristband, drone follows, good for motorcross / surfing, not for track driving. The drones could only keep up to about 60kms per hour I think.

A drone would be good at least up the back, alot of grass to fall on, I wouldn't see it being an issue, bar battery life and staff thoughts on it.

That's right, LS have spent a lot of time and no doubt money making the track safer. If you 'like' them on facebook you get regular updates on the work they do. It's been a very busy few months for them. So where they may have had guard rails, they now run concrete walls and some higher fencing. It's to prevent cars being launched upon impact or reinjected into the circuit.

They have also made some changes to the final corner onto the straight, too many cars turning in too early and punching the tyres on the outside. You may have noticed new white lines around the track, though those on the outside of that corner are the new track limits (~1.5m less room on exit). Anyone exceeding track limits will have their day ended.

For anyone that wants to go beyond happy laps pace to timeattack, speak/PM Nat or me.

I had to chop out about 5 minutes in total throughout all the videos to ensure that person(s) who wished not to be photographed/filmed did not appear in any parts of the video.

Only one location in this speccy vid. I'm going to see if there is anyway of getting to places near hungry and/or chicane and bridge area as they have been great locations for taking photos and videos in the past.
