Hi just wondering what type of turbo are in the new MK7 GTI/R? Is it still a K03/K04 Borg Warner or a IHI made turbo? Also are the vehicles still made in Germany that we receive in Australia? Looking at upgrade my APR Stage 2+ 08 MKV GTI next year to an R or another GTI... decisions decisions!

These would be covered under warranty... Hopefully even those that had been modded.

Warranty doesn't help you when your stuck on the side of the road

My understanding is the 4motion Golfs are still exclusive to Germany manufacturing, so that includes the R. Not sure about the GTI

That info is out of date. There have now been reported failures of the 722A. As of late October we're up to 722H apparently.

Does anyone have info on what changes were made to each revision of this turbo? We could find that the 722A failures were isolated/unrelated or on a much smaller scale than the earlier rev models. It would be surprising for a turbo manufacturer as big as IHI to continue to get the design wrong after so many revisions.

Picked up my Mk7 R mid Dec, Build date Sep 14. Checked the turbo and have 722A fitted. Have email VWA asking about having it updated with the new revision and why it has not been recalled.

Can guess the response.

My R is a July build: I can see the Turbo but where do I find the part #?

Easiest way I found to find it is to turn your phones flash to "On" so it is constantly on and start recording a video whilst sticking your phone down as per the above arrow.

I emailed VW a week ago now with no response regarding the feeling of having an "unreliable" car that is known to have faulty components.

Pretty standard level of customer service from VWA.

I investigated the turbo on my Golf R yesterday - purpose was to try to see if the end float was easy to measure or not. You can get your fingers on it (on the compressor wheel) but its very hard to get a dial gauge in there.

Anyway, mines an early version & its had a very hard time & it feels like brand new!

I'm guessing that my dec 2013 build golf r will be one of the early early models :(..

Will probably suffer from the same turbo failures not worth the 5k they want for it

Bit early to conclude that Marc, given all the key parts are different, although given the latest news is that stop/start is a key contributor that may still be the case.

It uses an atmospheric BOV anyway, which is illegal in Aus AFAIK.

I'm not impressed by the hybrids at all I wouldn't go down this path myself. I'd just be waiting for a Garrett drop in or similar something properly designed not a mismatch
BOV doesn't matter just put a recirculating one on there.

Uses the same frame prop shaft etc, would be enough to assume it would suffer issues of the same sort or Audi would have adopted some same sort of design. Not even Audi have fixed the issue yet.

VWA told me to see the dealer about it, dealer told me to go to VWA about it, and the fun begins.
