Sorry if this has been previously discussed, just wondering how hard a Dynaudio retrofit would be in an 09 R36? Also wondering how hard it would be to install a sub if the Dynaudio option is too much of a stuff around. Thanks for any help and advice.

look for a thread by nermal, he has done the dynaudio retrofit, unsure about sub.

Here's the guide booba mentioned:

This was for an '08 R36. Others have had trouble retrofitting the amplifier on later models - looks like VW changed the wiring after '08.

The retrofit took around 3 months... 3 months to find the parts and 1 day to install! =P .. It was relatively easy after getting the hang of removing door trims etc.

As for the sub install, I'm working on a custom false-floor enclosure. Will post a couple of photos shortly.

You can tap the amplifier inputs to get a high-level signal for your amp. The outputs are filtered (above 60Hz from memory?), so you don't want these.

Northfield at Marooka in Brisbane can install the lot in an R36 (including a Dynaudio Esotar 1200!). They also build enclosures, which in hindsight would have been worth it... If not in BNE, maybe look up a high-end audio shop?

Thanks for the info, I'm in Melbourne. I'm pretty happy with the stock speakers I just want some more bass, but I wouldn't be too confident installing a sub myself so I'l ring around and try and find a decent place who know what they're doing.

Finally got a few extra hours to spend on the project..

Things left to do:

Run cabling for sub (2 x 4 gauge cables with 120A Anderson clips, for easy removal)
Attach lid of removable box (fibreglassing)
Fibreglass suspended speaker ring, with custom speaker grill
Cover in carbon fibre finish
Save up for Esotar 1200, amp and installation

Here are the latest pics (bottom 'tub' done, false floor installed w/ dynamatting, lid recessed):

A little while has been an understatement.. Had to park the project for quite a while, but it's now back on track (slowly):

Err no... takes too long and costs too much =P

It was more of a hobby build than anything

Heh, thanks - I'm happy to share any learnings if others want to give it a go. I have plenty of photos too!

Over the past couple of years, I've probably sunk roughly 100-150 hours and a couple of grand worth of materials/consumables into the project.

A lot of that time/money was lost through waste (learning how to do things, fixing stuff-ups)... It could probably be done for approx half the time/cost if someone had loads of spare time, the right tools and everything was available - so if I were to start again, I'd probably just pay the professionals to do it ;-)

OTOH, if someone were to make a mould, it may be even quicker/cheaper to produce these.

I'm going to put my R36 up on car sales soon.... wife's car is due for an upgrade =(

If anyone in Brisbane is interested in making an offer on the enclosure, please send me a PM. Otherwise, I'll be including it in the sale.

It was custom made to fit around the spare wheel on my R36, but *should* fit any B6 Passat (will need to be test-fitted). Doesn't include sub or amp.
