I got a Fender Edition Beetle and found the driver's seat back had started to fray. This occurred when the car was only less than 9000km and the car is only about 9 months old.

My dealer has told us that this is not covered by warranty. I think this is ridiculous for such a low mileage. Does anyone have any similar experience?

Not on a Beetle but my wife's Yaris driver's seat pilled and faded on the outer edge of the backrest within the first year. This is extremely common and Toyota's attitude was identical. Dealer said only in extreme cases (read: worn through) would Toyota even think about it. We just fitted seat covers in the end.

Is this where metal parts of jeans/belt rub?

No metal parts on my jeans or belt but I think it might be the lumbar pad pushing the seat back harder against my hip.

Stealer came back with a $1500 fix and $500 off that for goodwill. ie $1000 for rear seat cover.. they know where they can do with that.

Unfortunately they dont cover wear and tear which is what this is. You'll find it will be something on your clothes will be rubbing against this area. It could be the waistband of you.pants rubbing against it when your sitting. You'll find the waistband will be a bit tougher then the seat material and is causing it to wear.

nevertheless, such wear at this mileage don't bode well for the longevity of this product. :(

NOT HAPPY VW

See it quite a bit. Wallets in back pockets are the most common cause. If you get a razer and scrape it carefully a lot of it comes off and looks 95% better...VDUB.
