Hey guys I just purchased a 97 polo open air! Now I've searched around and haven't found a sure answer,so......on a cold start the idle sits around 780-820 and it shutters abit(not under acceleration tho) until warm?throttle body dirty? And the exhaust leaks a waterish black stuff! Not fuel or anything, cat could be ruined or more serious? Or a by product from a dirty throttle? Any help appreciated.

Cheers guys
Gav

Waterish black stuff is water :)

Manual or auto? When cold an auto will idle about 900-950 or so until warm then go down to 600 or so. A manual will idle at I think the setting is 870.

Throttle body would be my first check, clean it and if you have a vagcom (or access to one), then run the throttle body reset/alignment which will step through the range of motion and tell you if the electronic side of it (for things like idle) is working..

They are not uncommon to fail so its a good start

Well done on the purchase too... The open air models are nice.. Just keep that roof in tip top shape as they are not cheap to replace and also keep the guides lubed as motors are not cheap either ;)

Manual all the way! Just cleaned out the throttle and did a reset, idle fine then went back to 780-820 so I've ordered a coolant temp sensor as I've read that's a common problem so see how that goes. I'll be doing a "build" thread soon once I've got it registered and in its daily use!

Manual is better I agree :). Hope u didn't pay too much? It will fail at some stage, get yourself one of these too :)

Contains many bits that are common, thermostat and housing as well as the coolant flange... It's cheap all things considered

Good stuff! 166k is good... Just keep an eye on the gearbox, they are not known for their reliability

Yeah I've heard that the leak at the top of the box and people miss it then it ruins the bearings

My 6N2 was leaking towards the bottom where the selector shaft enters when I bought it. Replaced the seal & it's all good.
Mine has perfect synchros & is very quiet at 152,000km.

My gearbox is very quiet and selects gears perfectly so I'm not worried about it but I will be giving it a good over to make sure there's no leaks!

the fluid is water/soot condensation from the exhaust system.. i suspect the car has not been driven much (kms woult attest i guess).. it will stop when the car has been driving for 10 mins or so. if you see it when you arrive home from driving (which you wont) then you can worry (which you wont need to :))

Thought I'd give an update, changed the coolant temp sensor made a little difference so I decided to check the plugs and leads.....some nuff nuff has put two different sets of leads on and plugs which 3 out of 4 have a top connector to the lead missing so I'm surprised it has ran at all!
