View Full Version : Attention MK7 Golf R owners: are you missing an engine cover?

So I went on my first VW cruise the other weekend and it was great.

Up until everyone wanted to see under the bonnet!

Turns out the front black plastic shroud may be missing. See pics below comparing a GTI to an R.

Thing is, the dealer today told me all their Rs are missing it.

Anyone else got it?

Not a massive issue, but I thought it was interesting.

If your talking about the inlet mani cover - then i dont think the R engine comes with it.

Interesting...why do they do that?

Cost.

I can't see a reason why you couldn't fit one yourself.

Perhaps the R version of the engine has some differences in the inlet manifold shape/design and the cover doesnt fit?

Might be to dissapate some heat or something due to the bigger turbo. Or its part of a slight weight saving. But most likely its just cheaper to not fit it as it serves no purpose!

^ well the turbo is up the back so that theory doesnt make sense.

If you image search mk 7 golf r engine bay, most have the cover....but some don't.

They stripped it down for the 'hot weather climate'. :)

Does everyone else with an R have the R on the engine cover. My engine cover is exactly like the GTI one for some reason complete with the red TSI rather than silver.

Im guessing someone at VW worked out they were spending x amount of dollars and x amount of manhours producing and making a piece of crappy black plastic that serves no purpose whatsoever not even making an aesthetic difference to the engine bay and have decided to cull it from further productoon in the interests of profits. This maybe why it is seen on some cars and not others!

Maybe pop into another dealership and see if you get the same response.
And see if you can find a car on the lot that has it fitted.

Mine comes without the shroud in front of the engine as well.

Now this is interesting. Your engine cover should have the silver TSI with an 'R' on ot, and not the red TSI. Have you checked with the dealer? It's quite appalling that this was missed. Make sure your engine/turbo isn't set up as a GTI too! :)

The dealer said they'd order me one. But I said not to worry about it. Just was curious as to why it might be missing

Our GTI has it, but the Golf R doesn't.

My MY16 GTi doesn't have it and it looks like there is a bit missing under the bonnet.

It was only fitted up until a certain build date according to ETKA
