Ok... Lots of time and lots of things happening with the Bora !
its had a full service now and a proper haldex oil change and filter. No more noise from the rear when turning or reversing !! The fluid wasn't that grubby but there wasn't as much as there should have been !! No leaks so not sure why this was so.... Just a big relief that alls well....
interior has been returned from trimmer and he's done an awesome job. Unfortunately I couldn't get the sunroof blind to fit and work as it should despite new glides.... It wouldn't let the glass roof retract for some reason so I just left it out for the minute. I was sick of driving it around rattling away.... So now all interior fabric areas have been replaced and it looks as new. I've just bought a full R32 black leather seat set so that will go in after a minor repair and lots of leather conditioner.... The R32 wheel will be recovered in black suede ...
Theres a stud conversion on its way from the UK and when that gets here I'll replace the front brakes with the grooved discs that match those on the rear ... The rear calipers were a bitch to wind back in but the right tools make it easy !!
Exterior wise I've clay barred it and used meguires ultimate range of polishes and it's now very shiny !! I've sourced new oettinger badges for the rear lid.... It looks a little cluttered - 4 badges.... Not sure if they'll all stay or go... The new 01BORA plates identify it in any case

Cheers for the comments !! The finish on the wheels is Black Chrome and it looks different depending on lighting conditions ...
The shark fin antenna was on the car when I got it.... I've seen similar on eBay !
Just home from Sydney with my R32 goodies.... A busy few days cleaning the leather and rejuvenating it before fitting it all over the next few weeks .... R32 number 186 was the donor car if anyone has a registry going !!
The Audio system is the next and last item up for sorting ....
if anyone has recommendations on replacement speakers and a head unit I'd love to hear them !!

Ive also bought the coil overs from the R32 being parted out.... I was only after the rears to try something different and hopefully slightly less harsh than the pedders/koni sport combination that i have at the minute..!! will advise what i end up using and the surplus will be posted in the for sale section ...

After weeks of waiting for parts, picking up parts, fitting parts, cleaning parts, searching for more parts I did something that I hadn't done with this car much ..... I went for a drive !!
From the Bay to Goulburn and then Goulburn to Canberra and then back to Batemans Bay again....
The seats were supremely comfortable... The new Blaupunkt DVD player worked seamlessly with the iPhone, the car went flawlessly ... It was quiet, comfortable, completely uneconomical and most of all it was fun...

Not it much left to do to it now except more drives like this and some fine tuning.... The odd squeak here and there.... And wash it again
...

Fixed the Bora reputation for less than ordinary high beam performance .....
HID (55 watt) enhanced Cibie Super Oscars .... mounted to front bar so they can be removed with it...

im not expecting anyones approval but the car has been built for trips between the Bay and Canberra/Sydney so performance and application win over aesthetics.....

any reason you didn't opt for a LED light bar? 20" 2 or even 3 row would have pounded out the light and used less power and you get spread and spot and less "ugly" on the front lol probably less chance of smashing them with a rock too

LeStig
09-06-2014, 06:58 PM
Ugly ??
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2014/06/IMG_1937_zps9e0a4c87-1.jpg (http://s587.photobucket.com/user/LeStig_photo/media/IMG_1937_zps9e0a4c87.jpg.html)

I'm probably older than most ..... i tend to stick with brands that I've used over the years... Motalita, Cibie, Autosol, Bilstein etc.....
HID is very energy efficient and with 9 inch reflector the output is rather special.... I've been in a 4wd with 60cm Baja LED light bar... brilliant output and spread, distance was ok... but not in the same league... completely subjective of course !!

what do you do with the crispy critters in the beam? haha

LeStig

Ive had a few questions re mounting these on a Bora

The mount is simply an alloy number plate mount available at any auto parts store.
I drilled out the original number plate mounting points to take bolts and washers. The front was off to do this .... And the metal inner bar actually sits below this area so it's only the plastic/moulded bar cover that is supporting the bracket/lights. That doesn't sound like much but the bracket has a good surface area and is braced internally so when mounted back up the lights are very secure and the bar cover isn't under any stress. I mounted the ballasts to the steel inner bar and ran all the wiring back it the rear of the passenger headlight/battery area.
To secure the lights completely and take all movement away I use stainless jubilee hose clamps cut and flattened out attached to the top of the light body and in this case passing through the meshed part of the grill to the composite radiator support panel behind - I'll add a photo to show this - this stabilises the lamp and allows for adjustment as well !!
The negative wiring is direct to battery as there is no earth at the lamp and the ballasts are powered from a relay mounted next to battery so short wiring runs. The trigger wire for high beam is taken from headlight via a scotch lock ( the only time I'd use them )
i haven't put a switch in so the lights are on when high beam is used. If I was using a switch I'd run the earth wire for the relay back into the cabin through a switch and then to ground so the relay wouldn't kick in until the switch was closed.

one to each light and they are rock solid.... No holes in anything visible so fully reversible

Ok... As the engine in my Bora is now broken I've purchased a complete running and regoed 4 Motion to either replace the complete car with the transfer of parts or as a donor vehicle and just remove the engine....
so i have a complete car less engine to part out.
Near PERFECT black leather interior includes wheel and air bag. Brakes, suspension - all stock but excellent condition, panels, lights switches, haldex, exhaust etc..
As the car is still on the road i can confirm the condition of all the parts... Its rattle free, everything works - A/C, heater, its never been pulled apart so its really tight.... cloth areas of trim are grubby.. might clean up...
If anyone on this site is after anything please PM me and ill confirm availabilty, price and supply pics as requested....

South Coast Bora will live again....

Bora reborn ......
Nearly finished the 2nd edition of South Coast Bora. All the suspension, brakes, Interior and Audio from the original all black 2001 have now been transferred into the 2002 Black Magic chassis ....
Ive fitted HID headlamps and removed the super oscars for the time being....
All of the original Oettinger bits have been resprayed in the new colour and apart from the skirts are now fitted.
From ECS there's a cold air intake and the Magnaflow cat back exhaust ....
Kicker Sub and amp in boot...
New window tint being fitted this week and thats about all I've got planned for this car....

Bora has been going extra well so it's getting suspension updated again .... Stassis Koni coil overs are now in along with KMac castor and camber top mounts ... Finally fitted the rear adjustable control arms and new front lower control arms / ball joints and sway bar links ....
Its in for wheel alignment on Friday and setting ride heights ....
if anyone has suggestions for castor and camber settings I'd love to hear them ??
im going with -1 degree of camber front and -1.5 on rear ..... All others will be r32 factory unless there's a suggestion for something better ??
Also fitted Rigid Industries 6" led driving lights into front bar instead of remounting Super Oscars .... Unbelievable amount of output from such a small unit .... Pricey but you get what you pay for !!!
Pics to follow !!!

Pretty happy with them !!

The one question I couldn't get answered on any forum was ......are they noisy !!!!
You'll read that they are ... That they aren't ....
So far they are as quiet as the purple nolathan top mounts that I took out.
Easy to adjust. Plenty of adjustment. Easy to fit.....
Ive gotten my 1.5 negative on the front and a little extra castor

Bora coming out of hibernation for the usual family commitments over Christmas !!
From the south coast to western NSW on Christmas Eve - 500km - then back to Goulburn - 350km on Christmas afternoon for leftovers and back to the bay - 150km that night ready for work on Boxjng day !!!
So 1000km with a couple of kilos of prawns and a few dozen oysters for company !!
Hope everyone has a great and safe Christmas !!
If you see a shiny black Bora on the road give us a flash !!

LeStig

Update time .....
Bora going great , survived a few Christmas kms (2000 plus) but always room for improvement !!
So going the Audi TT front suspension conversion with a few extras ....
TT uprights or hub carriers which correct some of the suspension angles that get screwed up when you lower a Bora
Tubular lower control arms with spherical ball joints to get rid of the crap suspension bushes and get some consistent location .....
Changed to KW coilovers and am using new coils that are off my Sti ....
why ??
Ive found that whilst most ( all ?? ) coilover sets list firments for multiple models within a production range - mk4 platform with multiple engine and gearbox variants across multiple body types Bora, Golf, Audi, Beetle etc you get something that fits but I don't think works the best in specific situations ....
The Bora ... Biggest and heaviest engine and transmission option - same coilover as 1.8 .....
Mine rode ok around town but was inconsistent on choppy country roads and bottomed out frequently .....
Ive 4 different spring rate options for the WRX - which have a much better coilover setup than then Bora in that you can change ride height by shortening the effective strut length without affecting the spring preload - which fit my KW coilover shocks so I've gone up in spring rate and now I've a more consistent ride at highway speeds and almost no bottoming out at identical ride heights !!
Once the arms are here I'll fit it all up and get wheel aligned again with that ability to change camber from the top with the kmac top mounts , castor with the spherical rear control arm bush and track /camber with the adjustable lower (Audi) balljoint !!
ill post pics as I go !!
