To service, or not to service...

Hi guys,

Purchasing a VW up! from Melbourne that has just completed 15,000kms and hasn't had the annual service.

I'm from Brisbane and need to drive the vehicle back to Brisbane.

Would you recommend having the service carried out before returning, or just completing it once I'm back here?

Has anyone completed their first annual service for their up in Melbourne, and if so, any recommendations on where to do it? Price?

Looking at picking it up this weekend or early next week.

Thoughts?

I'd personally get the service - if for no other reason than the fact that you're about to drive the car 1700km and it'd be good to get everything in order before you drive...

As for costs, ring maybe a couple of dealers and good independent mechanics and get a few quotes :)

I would expect the seller to pay for the service if it is even slightly over the 12 months OR 15,000km. Part of supplying the vehicle in a "roadworthy" condition if it's a dealer/ car yard.

I would get it serviced (at very least just an oil and oil filter change) for peace of mind before you make the trip back home.

I know Volkswagen has fixed price servicing for the vehicle ($280 for the first 15,000km) but after browsing the forums I've found most people have found they charge more than the listed price. I just don't know of any good mechanics in Melbourne so its going to be really hit and miss for me.

The registration for the vehicle ended today as well as the vehicle is due for a service. Seller just wants a quick sale so I negotiated him down to 9,000 (5dr). I feel its a pretty good deal.

Hmm, I would buy an engine oil, the oil filter and start looking for any mobile mechanic nearby. Called him and explained the situation that I already have an oil and the filter, asking him if he had any VW experience and was confident to do the oil change for me. That way you know that the oil and the filter you bought ends up in your engine.

Yes, it is. :)
The rest is just all fluids check and top up if needed and a visual check and connecting to diagnostic machine, to reset the service interval and check for the software updates and the fault codes.

Providing its the same as all other VW's...it will need something that is "VW 504/507 approved".

The easiest of the available oils to get hold of will be the Penrite Enviro + 5w-30 which is in a black bottle with green writing on it. Supercheap / Repco etc stock it. Costs around $80 for 5L

Thanks. I've contacted 3 different mobile service company's in Melbourne and look forward to getting quotes responses. Hopefully they'll allow me to use my own stuff!

What part of Melbourne are you picking the car up from?

There are a few independants down in Mel that have good reps. Esp in teh SE quarter

Bayford VW in Camberwell would be the best dealership i have dealt with & would recommend them. However, i preferred going to an independent & got really good service from Richmond Motors (inner east) when i was in Melbourne.

Possibly Auto Union Deutsch in Oakleigh would be the closest independant

& there's probably something in the "recommended repairers & parts"area too
