Hi guys, hope everyone is having a kick ass start to the new year.
Ok so I bought my mk4 at the beginning of this year for a little over 6k. I think I got a pretty good deal as she has only done 130 on the clock and was owned by a vdub enthusiast. So it came with all the books up to date and is a tidy example inside with a few of the usual chips on the outside. But after a few good coats of clay she has come up rather tidy :)

As with most things I get pretty excited and starting ordering parts before we even got properly acquainted, she drives true and for added measure I've taken her down to BWA already and had a major service done, a few pipes replaced and a good going over now means she is good and ready for chip to go in and exhaust to go on both from BSR, Swedish chaps who know a thing or two about tuning.

So far I have swaped out the old rims that were pretty badly gutterashed for some 2013 Audi tt rotas they're a tight fit but make it look pretty sweet ( well I reckon anyway) but it threw a up a bit of a visual problem it looks a bit like a Rav 4 :P
I promptly took them back off and painted the calipers but will have to go back in and give it a good clean in the wheel arches, so it ready for the new suspension...

Any advice on suspension would be helpful as I am undecided as to wether I should go for coilovers?or a good set of bilsteins and some sport springs and use the savings for urethane bushes all round?
I'm looking to just slightly lower the car on its hunches maybe 30mm and not go stoopid low as it's the daily driver and still won't some resemblance of practicality.

The HPS Cold Air Induction goes in tomorrow as it has finally arrived from stateside so I'll take some pics as I install it.

I'll keep adding to the story as it continues....

Thanks for reading and please any advice is welcome.

To be continued...

Hey mate good to see you're getting straight into the mods :cookie:. I would vote coilovers. Trust me you won't be happy with a 30mm drop, I wasn't. I did the spring thing...twice and definitely recommend getting coilovers straight up. If you get a quality set the ride isn't harsh at all, firm but not harsh. Plus for the price of springs and quality dampers (bilstein, kw, eibach, etc) it's not much more to get a set of good coilovers, I got my kw v1s landed for $1300. I definitely recommend refreshing the front end while you're there though ecstuning sells some great kits. Be careful with that intake, as it's from the US it won't have a provision for the Ignition Control Module which is mounted in the stock airbox to keep it cool. If the icm fails then so does your car haha. However there are a few threads about workarounds for this issue.
Oh and :pics:

how far off legal is your ride height Lito??

rizzla
01-02-2014, 08:07 AM
That's why I'm hesitant with coilovers, I know the benefits are great in terms of adjustability and ride, but can I be bothered with the grief of being legal... Because let's face it if you put coilovers in there's only one height... Slammed! He he

Cheers for the tip Lito on the ignition module if had a look for some threads but I can't seem to find them, I was thinking bout drilling 8mm hole on wheel arch and bolting module to that just to get cool air on the back plate is this the right path or is it a bit backyard racing??

It's pretty close to being legal, haha. my sump hangs down a little below 100mm but everything else is fine.

I personally wouldn't go drilling holes. A big CPU heatsink and thermal paste is what some people do and it seems to work well, still I'd keep a spare ICM in the glovebox just in case :cookie:

CAI looks good installed, how's it sound?

rizzla
02-02-2014, 11:46 AM
Cool I wasn't too sure about it myself... Heat sink and thermal paste it is :D I'll be looking for a spare as well.

Sounds really good, nice and throaty, but nervous about the extra attention it might get due to all the extra induction noise... But I've been given a few thumbs up along the way as well so swings and roundabouts I guess.

I saw some pics on your ride too it looks sweet! Looks mean lowered! do you get any grief?

You can get new ICMs of the net for around $250, just don't go to the dealer for one because you'll pay double that! I've never really been looked at twice by the cops, even when I've been done for speeding the just give me a ticket and send me on my way, must be my pertty face haha.

Pretty sure the ICM I got was around $50, the exchange rate was a bit better but I bought it in the last year.

On another note, just dropped car off for suspension refresh, I decided to go for bilsteins and springs with urethane bushes all round. (I am aware this may start a war ;)

Also getting the CV's refreshed, so basically a whole front end freshen up and the back end too!

Of course the war will be commencing shortly. :cookie:

You might regret the urethane in the rear of the LCA, they can be squeaky, the S3 rubber bush is much better in that respect. The rear axle won't work correctly with urethane at the pivots.

I always curious at the motivation of spending money when nothing is broken?? CV joints on the whole work or make horrible noises. The boots are sealed or not.

I guess BSR are actually installing a chip rather than flashing the ECU?

Yeah BSR are installing. I have AGU motor with cable rather than DBW so couldn't flash.. Or so they say.

BWA auto gave me some advice on bits and pieces such as weeping CV joints and clutch is ok but will need doing in future. Prevention better than cure as I'm planning on keeping car it's the perfect blend of practical and fun so tidying it ALL up while I have the coin. I save about $500 bucks on labour as it all comes out at the same time.

Ok, now I am happy ;)

You can flash that ECU not many tuners have the tool for it. Clutches will always need doing eventually, like death and taxes. Without taking the gearbox off you couldn't predict when with any certainty.

Too true. I got 60K with a tune before my clutch needed doing. Now another 100K on, no signs of slipping.

Chip tomorrow,SaWeet!!!
Gotta say I'm pretty excited, everyone sounds happier with their beasts after the tune.
Looking forward to the company of a few extra horses and the good torque gains.

Exhaust goes in too this week. Cat back sport system also from BSR.

Question to all dubbers?!
Was thinking about going 2•5/3" down pipe but is it only worth it if I'm upping the ante with a bigger turbo?

Go for a 3 inch downpipe. Even without a turbo upgrade the car will rev out a little better

Go 3 inch, lots of off the shelf options. 42DD from Carformance, SPM from dubaddiction etc. Beauty of the mk4 GTI in Australia, no messing with Phase 2 software if you don't want to, no cat efficiency codes to worry about.

Small gains to be had by getting a tune, to make use of the earlier spool, but not really game changers.

The K03 does run out of puff much earlier than the K03s and K04 but if you intend keeping the car a couple of years, then you can add the turbo later.

+30hp for the K03s and +60hp for the K04 over a tuned standard car. Even more with a hybrid, but that takes engine work and get expensive really fast.

You've been a great help, I thought as much with the bigger turbos going hand in hand with engine work.
I'm thinking in a couple years I might go down that track!

Arrive in time as I will probably try and put them in too.

It's been a couple of months now and the chip has been doing a great job still get a kick out of the extra torque, I went for a drive along the putty road a couple weeks back and the suspension set up really came into its own! Needless to say I had an absolute ball, so much so I had to replace the brake slave cylinder as it was oozing under heavy braking...

Anyway I'll continue with the thread and put pics of the bumper repair 'a kinda how to' hopefully it helps some one.
There's still plenty more mods in the pipeline and I will add as I go. ;)
