View Full Version : 6N2 idle slow on startup.

Our Polo,[AHW engine] has had this problem for some time after it came in suddenly. First start of the day it idles around 500revs. After a short time it comes up to roughly 900rpm. When starting while warm it revs at 900rpm. Normal driving everything works as it should.Replacing the temp sensor & cleaning the throttle body made no difference. I also replaced the Lambda probe as the car has done 150,000km.
I bought a new cable from Ross Tech[HEX-USB+CAN] because my older one, VAG COM 409-1 from memory, wouldn't recognize the ECU.
VCDS shows, 00282 Throttle Position Actuator [V60]
26.00 Output Open
From what I have read this means that the throttle body is terminal & needs replacing.
What do you guys think?

As you mentioned, a new throttle body sounds like the solution (providing a clean and adaptation didn't do anything).

Thanks Lucas. I remember reading the club polo link, not sure about the VW Audi forum one. The poster had slightly different symptoms to ours. Once slightly warm, first 100meters or so, it performs faultlessly. It is a bit of a worry that after replacing his with a new one, he finished up with the same fault codes as mine. As most will know, the throttle body is very expensive so it's not an option of just trying a new one.
I haven't tried the adaption process yet as I am a little concerned it could make it worse.

Just try the adaption, it shouldn't make it worse, but its a risk you will have to take, or leave the car as is if you dont want to spend money.

I have done a few adaptions with the vagcom cable on the throttle bodies of 6n1's, it will complain if it doesn't work but i don't think it can break it and make it worse ;)

Thanks, I will give it a try when the weather cools down a bit.

I need to sell the Polo as I have bought a Tiguan but I would still like to fix it before I do.

Thanks for the offer Miro. I have a friend who is a electronics guru who was to come tomorrow morning but in view of our hot conditions I have put it off until the weather cools & we can think straight. He will look at the electrical diagram & check the cable going to the ECU.

Well my friend Phillip came today with his tools & with the aid of lots of printouts from the net & a electrical circuit he took readings from the pins in the socket on the throttle body & found readings between pins 1 & 2 were open. These are either side of the motor. Everything checked out OK with the pots & the switch between pins 3 & 7 worked fine. We removed the TB to see if we could get into the motor [wishful thinking] & as expected the spindle welded/sealed at both ends & not meant to be dismantled. The motor & all the gears turned freely. A little frustrating because there was continuity from the socket to the motor & Phillip thought that probably all that was wrong would be worn brushes.
So all put back together & the car started & ran as always.
After market TB on EbayUK seem to be around 95 pounds so I now need to check freight costs.

Well continuing on with the story so far, I found a new TB in the UK for from memory around 76 pounds. I emailed them & after waiting around 2 weeks[it was over the Christmas break] & never received a reply. Purchased one on EbayUK for 92 pounds + 24 pounds P&P with 12 months guarantee from a high volume seller with good feedback. It only took a week from buying to picking it up so very happy. Installed in Polo, started car & every looked good. Had to do some shopping & at the traffic lights engine was running/hunting between 1300 to 1800 revs approx. At home it was back to normal so I thought I would check for stored codes.
00516- Closed Throttle [Idle] Position Switch F60
27-00 -Implausible Signal.
I cleared code & tried to perform basic setting. After typing in 098 & then GO where it should say ADP OK it showed ERROR.

I removed the TB again to do some resistance readings. Here is a snapshot of the circuit diagram J338 Throttle valve control unit.

Here is the readings that Phillip took from the new TB to compare with the original VDO unit.
You can see the resistance between pins 7 & 3 is 28 ohms on the replacement compared with 1 ohm on the original. This is the resistance of the switch that opens as soon as the spindle is moved by the cable. This over rides what the ECU is trying to do.

After moving the throttle by hand, opening & closing the switch with the meter connected to pins 3 & 7, I got many different readings, some down to 1 ohm.
I thought I would take the end cover off to see if the contacts on the switch could be cleaned. Inside everything looked identical to the VDO unit except for the switch which has changed from open contacts to a sealed unit.[no chance of cleaning]
The TB has been posted back to the UK for a refund. In the meantime the old one is back on & we are back to the original problem.
I will repost when there is anything to report. Anyone got a used TB that still works?

Thankfully this saga is now over.[I hope]. After waiting for nearly a month after sending the faulty TB back to the UK & not hearing from the supplier, I thought it was time to follow up. The Post Office had recommended that I should pay the extra for tracking otherwise they could claim that they hadn't received it. It was obviously misplaced or put aside & after many emails they said they would refund the cost of the part & original freight. They didn't refund for my return cost so I am out of pocket $62.50. This is something to keep in mind when buying from OS.
I then had to wait for a S/H one to become available as the cheapest VDO brand I could find that was new was $506 + freight from Sydney. Installed the S/H one this morning,[$200 +gst] went through the adaption process & all OK now.
To finish off this thread, I thought I would include the adaption instructions using VCDS.
Select [Control Module]
Turn on ignition [do not start]
[01 Engine]
check for fault codes [Fault Codes-02], clear if any found.
Type in 098 for group
Click on [GO]
RHS on screen [ ADP OK] should appear
Leave for 30 secs. before [Go Back] each page & then Exit.
