I am about to do my first oil change on the Little Beastie. I have a short list, please comment as this would be a great help. When Matt put the SEAT 1.8 in he said it had around 120k, and he uses Castrol, and the CVWC uses Fuchs, or so confusing. I have had good results previously with Valvoline Max Life and then HPR 40 with the old wheezer engine.

Valvoline - Engine Armour
Fuchs - Titan GT Plus
Titan Super GTO
Castrol - Magnatec 10w 40
GTX3 15w40
Nulon - 15w40 Modern Engine Oil
Penrite - HPR 10

Most of these I think a blends.

The only advice I have is that you may be on the thin side with the grade, I would be putting in a 20 or 25W instead of a 10 or 15 as if it is not consuming oil now, going to a thin grade may not help in that stake.

I am not sure if you know what weight is in it now... but I would not go any thinner.

I may be too cautious! :?

If your engine is only around 120k old I wouldn't be going too thicker grade either.

With engine out of my old beater, which is now in the gti & nearly 400k old, I run Mobil Super XHP 15w-40 from rebuild (a very long time ago) & have never had any problem's at all. No oil consumption ever.

I also run this in my mum's Mk2.

The oil's you have used in the past like HPR40 are for older engine's which are on the worn out side of thing's & are for mainly curing engine knock, blowing smoke etc. I wouldn't be running that in a fresher engine.

looking up the haynes manual, it recommends 5-40 to 20-50 for the petrol engines. my 2.0l has 138000kms and i changed it over from 15-40 to 5-40 (fully synthetic) and am having no issues...

If you go to the VW "Erwin" site you can register and login free of charge and there you will find a free download of all VW approved oils. Most synthetics brands are listed.
