Hi all,
I've just got a '95 VR6 and i'm after the various tools to service it. The spark plug leads are pretty hard to get at and i've heard of a VW specific tool for removing the plug leads. Where could i get this tool (in tasmania), how much, what does everyone else use to get their plug leads off? Any advice would be apreciated.
Thanks Tazzy

the genuine plastic ones you get are crap. they break too easily and cost about $35 to replace
Make your own out of a piece of pipe. I found an old mountain bike handlebar in my dads shed.
an hour or so with a dremel and an angle grinder and this is what i emerged with!

Nice one Tim :D Matt was talking about it during one of my visits and it's quite an ingenuine thing, though I heard they're a favourite among service mechanics.

You should have that stashed somewhere on your car; I believe it came on all vehicles? Someone can comfirm this for me. Try the bag where the jack and the other tools are kept.

on VR6 golfs is came clipped to the bonnet support. U can see the plastic one in the background of my pic. That was the one i had my local dealer order in for me cos the one that come with my car was broken already. It lasted one spark plug change and then broke again. If you cant be arsed making one there are suppliers in the US that sell metal ones but theyre pretty pricey. around $30US i think? plus shipping on top of that. You should all just upgrade to Schrick manifolds. Then you have no need for the puller anyways :P

I wouldn't mind one of these tools since I don't think I even have the plastic one.

I can't seem to see any on eBay, although it may bery well be that I'm not searching for the right thing.

If anyone interested in getting one of the metal ones from the states (assuming we can find a supplier) at about US$30 I'm keen and maybe we can save a few $$ if we do a group buy, if nothing else we can save on postage :D

So anyone seen any of the metal ones available of late, either overseas or locally? and who is interested in getting one (or two)?

I'll make a new thread "Tazzy's VR6" with some pics pommy golfer asap! :-)

My dad's playing around with some pvc pipe to make a template for these spark plug pullers. When he gets it right ill post some pics and demensions on here so you can make your own out of steel.

if u have an angle grinder and a dremel its seriously not that hard to do. especially if you have a plastic one already to use as a guide

That would be very handy since I don't have the stock one to have a go at making my own... Maybe you should start making and selling them :D

Here is the DIY spark plug puller.

First we made a concept out of plastic to get the general shape.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2007/09/IMG_6467-1.jpg

Then we moved onto steel to get the final measurments.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2007/09/IMG_6475-1.jpg

And the final product is made of 18mm ID alloy. Use either alloy or copper. To cut the slot you need an endmill or digrinder or dremel or a rotory burr.

hey tazzie,

I need a demonstration on how to use the spark plug remover tool :D lol

It wouldnt even go over the lead ends (black rubber end) lol.

I think I must have aftermarket leads :?

So i kinda had to widen it up a bit for it to work. :( sorry.

But even then i couldnt figure out how to use the cut out grooves to my advantage. I got the plugs off by pushing the tool over the plug until tight and then just pulling em off.

So yea thats my experience with damn vr6 spark plug leads.
Sorry i had to damaged your beautifully made tool tazzy :)

Oh well that's interesting eric... We can get all but one off with ease as far as i know. Might have to make another trip up to dev:D
Dad doesn't want to start making them to sell, sorry. but they aren't that hard to make from my understanding.

I'll try posting this into DIY thread, wish me luck...j:

this is what my spark plug leads look like...
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2007/09/IMG_6448-1.jpg

You can see here the slot in the tool is made to fit the little flanges on the leads
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2007/09/IMG_6449-1.jpg

So you slide the tool onto the lead and over the flange as per these images
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2007/09/IMG_6452-1.jpg
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2007/09/IMG_6454-1.jpg

Also helps to spray some CRC inside the lead, makes them go on easier

Hope this helps

Tim
