Took delivery of our Yeti last week and couldn't be happier. Was car hunting for over a month and had tried out the 6R Polo GTi, mk7 golf, cx5 and more but the Yeti came out tops. The only thing I'm wondering is why there's so few of these on the roads! They seem to be popular in europe. Our car comes with xenons and front/rear park sensors which were important as it would be my wife driving it most of the time and have xenons on my a4 and just love it. Now I'm thinking of doing a black/silver wrap on the roof and getting some bike racks too. Thought of a flash but the engine has more than enough power for our use.

Glad you are enjoying it.
I have only seen 2 on the road since they were released.

I've seen about 3 so far in brisbane in the past 2 weeks but still pretty rare I'd say. Paying full price is hard with all the competition around but we got ours for a good price with low kms and options that we wanted.

Congrats!! You'll love it. I've had mine since last October and haven't regretted a thing. I'm seeing more and more on the roads down here with 2 silver ones spotted today on the way back from the airport.

Congratulations - yes they are a great car
As you said, it's hard to work out why here aren't a lot more around
I put it down to short sightedness -
meaning that strange look you get as they screw their nose up
when they either see you in it or when you say that you have one
"You've got a what ?" or "What on earth is THAT !!"
Sad part is it is THEY who are missing out - is yours the DSG ?

We have had ours since September last year and in that time have seen
2 parked
1 in a shopping center carpark
and then about 2 months back passed 2 on the same day !!
One was red with a black roof - now that is THE colour combination !!!
Ours is Lava Blue

IMHO the lights are probably the weak point but you have that covered with the xenons
I'll have to get better bulbs, but then I don't do much night driving anyway

I've got the lava blue as well so I reckon a silver roof would look better than black. The xenons are great and was lucky to find one with them as they are rare. MFD is telling I've been getting 5.9 - 6.1 driving recently! Mainly urban/suburban driving too. My A4 1.8T which is quoted to do 5.9 combined has been getting 7 at best with 65% highway driving. Go yeti!

Agree with the silver roof, would be better than black with heat as well
Post some pics when you get it done, what sort of $$$ they want for that ?
Not sure just how accurate the MFD fuel usage is

I'm located near Yatala and today went to Caboolture and back over Gateway
MFD showed 5.3l/100km for the trip on way up and then 5.6 as an overall for both ways
which included a bit of running around up there and then again when we got back
Like running around the shops and refueled etc.

Which gearbox did you get ?

I've got the lava blue as well

Meant to add :duh:
I've found the Lava Blue very hard to keep looking clean
The shape of the Yeti probably doesn't help but I go to a local airfield regularly
And it has about 700 metres on dirt/gravel road in/out
Every time I go there it is a wash down, otherwise it looks like it hasn't been washed in a month

I almost bought one. But it has no boot space at all. So failed the family car test. Bought a Jetta.

I had a jetta previously and the boot is crazy big but with the yeti's removable 2nd row seats, I was happy with that. also hardly ever fill up the boot anyways.

Yup. Had it just over a year & 3 months. Absolutely love it. Awesome, awesome car that still surprises me with it's overall ride quality.

Would LOVE to put a set of Matterhorns on it, and get the rear-view mirrors coated black. Matterhorns are stupid expensive to buy from Skoda, but I'm hoping to either set up a swap with another Yeti owner on here, or perhaps try and organise a swap with a dealer who has one on a showroom car - which will only work in both cases if they don't like the Matterhorns and want Spitzbergs.

Backup plan is to get a set of R-Type VW wheels painted black, which I don't think would look that bad either, to be honest. Some might disagree though...

Now, on the fuel - I usually use Caltex (with a Woolies shopper docket)
From about the third tank I get 900+ range after filling

What gearbox yours got ?

Yes magic gearbox.
Our running is at the other end of the spectrum traffic wise
We live on the bay surrounded by sugarcane so it is a 15 minute run back to the main drag and the shopping centre
There are 2 ways we can get back to the M1. Speed limit is 100kph when we head north and 80 and 100kph when we head south
So economy is probably about as good as we will ever get

We went to Caboolture last weekend and the MFD showed 5.4l/100km for the trip up
then with some running around up there and again when we got back the overall for the total trip was 5.6l/100km

But I seem to recall reading somewhere that the trip computer is optimistic

Thanks Tranporter
Will have to do something as they are a lot less than the old series 80 Landcruiser that had the same H4 headlights + another 2 for high beam

On the lights - another question
Has anyone replaced the DRLs with LEDs or something that gets away from the yellow of the std bulbs ?
And if "yes" how to overcome the CanBus blown bulb issues

If the MFD is inaccurate, does that mean the other readings could be too? I've got an A4 B8 MY13 and the 'total' consumption figures seem spot on but the 'trip' consumption figures seem more conservative. Unfortunately still doesn't match the advertised numbers though unlike the yeti which goes under the quoted 6.9L/100km.

I've got the original Yeti roof bars which I'm reasonably happy with. Drove up from Melbourne to Falls Creek 2 weeks ago with a car full of food and a Thule roof box filled with skis and boots and got 7.9L/100km (MFD 7.5) which I think is ok.

Have no experience with the Yeti fuel system but have installed a fuel flow system in an ultralight aircraft. In the aircraft system it is a small vane that spins as the fuel flows through an orifice combined with some means of producing a pulse for a known volume as it goes through, which is an LED with a photo transistor. Then the "gauge" has software that simply converts these pulses to litres per hour, and if you feed in the cruise speed and amount you put in the tanks it will tell you distance to go, time to go and fuel remaining with an alarm when it gets to your preset low. Just like the Yeti.

It is factory set but has to be calibrated to fine tune it - think you can do this with the Yeti one too. In my plane the flow transducer is installed not far after the electric auxiliary fuel pump which is one of those "rattle" type pulse pumps. This pulsing has an effect on the flow, I suspect that it is the pressure pulses, but anyway it causes it to read about 10% high when the pump is running. This is no real problem since the aux pump is only on during take off and landing.

All this IS going some where, so hang in there. LOL

I believe all the readouts for the fuel usage, range etc, will come from a single transducer so any variation or inaccuracy in that unit will reflect across all readings. In addition because of the way that the work they will all have some degree of inaccuracy, the least of which will be caused rapid changes in flow.

All this if just IMHO and I stand to be corrected by those with far greater knowledge than I have

Yep.

It can be calibrated. Some guys in the UK have done it. You could search Briskoda forum for the info. You will need VW software and cable.

I want to calibrate my speedo. It's a good 10% out.

I was told pretty much any colour combination was possible when I ordered - cost $600 and a 4 month wait. I wanted this combo, and asked if there were any already in the country so I didn't have to wait. There were 3 in total - 2 of which had leather interior and sat nav (the former I don't like, the latter I don't need) and the final had rear parking sensors. That was the one I went for, Zagame obviously bought it off the dealer (in Tassie if I remember) and Bob's yer uncle (or late father, in my case). I think they worked the transfer cost into my final price somehow, but I didn't really notice - they seemed pretty keen to sell and I got a great trade in, so I was smiles all round - mainly cos I got my red with black roof combo.

Now if only I could get those Matterhorns ....

Hey Boon

As mentioned earier, our running is mostly "rural" and the MFD pretty well sits on 6.1lt/100km for most of the time
The results above only happen on the M1

Which is rather comical as our new (6months) Fiat 500 TwinAir Plus sits on exactly the same figure --6.1lt/100km
Slight difference in engine and transmission though - not to mention weight

Fiat is 2 cylinder, petrol, 0.9 liter turbo and car weighs under 1 tonne.
Gearbox is a Dualogic "robotised manual" - has single clutch but otherwise similar to our DSG.
Works just fine but changes are noticeably slower
Has the "paddles" for gear changing which are wild and so much fun
We leave it in "auto" and you can over-ride with the paddles at any time

The Fiat is so much "fun" to drive that the Yeti is not being used much!!

Boon
11-09-2013, 09:48 AM
I was considering the fiat too but unfortunately wasn't as practical in size

Blue103TDIDSG

I was considering the fiat too but unfortunately wasn't as practical in size
Yes it is a lot smaller than the Yeti
We had the Bambinos back in the late '70's and then I restored one in mid '80's

The new 500 is about 50% bigger.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2013/09/oldandnew500_zpsd3b4cca8-1.jpg (http://s261.photobucket.com/user/patochris/media/Fiat%20500/oldandnew500_zpsd3b4cca8.jpg.html)

So there is plenty of space for 4 average sized adults
Boot is about 1/2 that of the Yeti but big enough for the shopping etc
Doors are a problem as in getting in and out of the rear seats - much better with 4 of them (doors)....LOL

Quite a feat by Fiat to somehow get the nostalgic character of the older Bambino and combine it with all the modern things like traction control, ABS , hill holder plus a bunch of meaninglless letters.

Not to mention going from rear engine rear wheel drive to front engine front wheel drive

BTW Ours is the same as the one in the photo - white with black roof

The other guy has offered to repair it and just getting a few quotes now. Am having thoughts of spraying the front and rear bumpers to body colour at the same time which I think would look sweet. Calculated fuel consumption over 22,000km to date of mixed city/freeway driving has been slowly falling from about 7.8 to 7.1 L/100km. Assumes the odometer is correct. Planning to recalibrate. Running higher tyre pressures should actually mean I've gone a little further in real km - but have to find a number for design tire circumference or whatever is in the computer at present. Car computer seems about 10% optimistic on consumption. Speedo seems about 5% optimistic compared to TomTom.
