What is axle tramp ?

I've tried the search function but the best explaination I can see is it is something to do with torque steer associated with FWD cars ?

Anyone able to correct me or give me a better explaination ?

Axle tramp is caused when FWD cars lose traction with the road surface, causing the wheels to bounce/vibrate vertically (up & down). This is usually not good for the car as it is loud and potentially damaging, maybe. Ha ha. Hope this helps...

Not just FWD cars. It also happens to RWD cars too!

I have had an EA Falcon S since new and it developed axle tramp through worn shocks and bushes. Did a Chopper Read (hardened it up) by installing a complete Tickford EL suspension kit including springs, shocks and nolathane bushes. Needless to say that it not only stopped the tramping but also made it handle considerably better. Lowered it too by 25mm at the front and 31 mm in the rear.

When the axle does this obviously you are not connected to the road and not effectively using the power or steering you have normally.
