Hi All,

I have started to setup an online petition to see if we can encourage VWA to provide access to Intelematic's FM band Traffic Message Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_message_channel) in the next map update.
This function has been available for years in Europe, yet we in Australia are not able to make use of advanced routing based on traffic info.
Think what you may of the usefulness of this function but I don't believe anyone got a discount on their expensive navigation system because not all functions work in Australia...

The petition is available at:
Petition Traffic Message Channel on VW/Skoda navigation systems in Australia (http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/vwa_tmp_for_nav/)

This is a first draft only if anyone has any suggestions to improve the wording of the petition please feel free to let me know.

Please publicise this widely to try and get as many signatories as possible.

Thanks

Signed, hopefully they integrate this as it is long overdue.
When it comes standard on low spec cars it should be available in the premium market.

Suggestion can you add a link to an image or two to show what people are missing. Some of our VWW forum friends may not have seen it in action in other countries.

Good suggestion I will do that over the weekend.

You might start by spelling the name right — Intelematics — but so far the Suna system doesn't seem to work all that well here.

Thank you I will correct the speeling when I can.
As I mentioned in the post this isn't about a discussion of Suna's product. Lets leave that for when we can sample it for ourselves like we should be able to... ;)

I can see why you would want it but I did find this snippet -

Intelematics Australia[12] broadcasts a national encrypted RDS-TMC service focused initially on urban Australia under the brand 'SUNA Traffic Channel'. The service reaches around 85% of urban Australia, using commercial FM broadcasters in seven cities, as well as via XML for online and smartphone applications. The service is available on GPS navigation systems including Navman, Garmin, Mio, Uniden, iPhone (Navigon & Sygic), Eclipse, Pioneer, Alpine and Clarion. SUNA Traffic Channel is also available in Ford, Holden, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru and Mercedes Benz navigation systems. SUNA is currently the only source of comprehensive, metropolitan congestion monitoring content in Australia – proprietary technology interfaces to traffic light control systems. The SUNA broadcast service is fully compliant with both RDS and TMC. However, since the broadcast is encrypted it does not work on in-car GPS navigation systems that do not have a commercial arrangement with SUNA.

which might mean that its not included because VWA would have to pay for licenses to use the service.... of course we (the VW customers) have all paid for it anyway, as you say.... but the way VWA seem to serve their customers may indicate that its more likely they would only bother if it didnt cost them anything. :P

Yes vwa would have to reach a licensing agreement to be able to use a decryption key. This would be part of the cost of the update.

What I meant was that in Australia Telematics are implementing the SUNA system, and it seems to be all too often far behind actual traffic events, so you wind up in the same traffic jam whether you have it or not.

It seems the Euro and US systems are much more efficient.

I'll still sign the petition, tho' — and best of luck (IMHO you'll need it...)

Hey kamold,

Signed the petition no problem. Good luck with this - hope it works. If it doesn't the only other option would be to obtain that mythical CD_7703...

I have a tmc tick box but don't get info for anything due to my location. My local stations don't even transmit the normal text of the city stations. Currently, I have fw5218 and coded the DVD to region 0 with some expensive hardware and software I bought.

So what I am trying to say is, does anyone in the cities have the 5218 firmware that can clarify if it does or doesn't work for station ID, current song selection and TMC.

Tmc is only for traffic info. We could only receive it if vw had licensed the correct decryption key from Suna.

Rds displays song and station info.
This is available and working with firmware 4120 and above. This is not encrypted so works for any station that transmits this data.

Signed, this has been going on for way to long. You might have more chance now whilst everything is going on around them, recall for DSG, non recall for TDI, recall for T5 etc and I gather they do not want anymore negative customer impressions.

I had TMC on my old Eclipse head unit, whilst not always 100% accurate it was handy to get some idea of traffic conditions.

Some information is surely better than none.

Personally I always use Google maps with traffic overlay and find that to be accurate to the minute.

But just to read any warnings for the metro area could help to make a decision to choose a different route.

I did some more sleuthing into hacking TMC into the RNS510 by looking at the TMC enabled euro maps. Sadly even though the key is easy to decrypt with linux and a card with fm radio, it isn't just a matter of entering it into the maps disc in a config file. The VW maps have a whole look up database to assign the data sent over TMC to the actual roads on the maps.

Very much in VWs hands to make SUNA work

Yep, unless someone can get their hands on that 7703 CD as has been mentioned...TOC indicated that TMC was enabled. Which presumably meant they had a temp license from Intelematics for testing....

Do we know if the SUNA TMC database is available anywhere? I mean, with the right manpower, it should be possible to map it against VW maps. I doubt the location mapping would change much between versions - maybe additions/removals.

That's not how it works unfortunately. It's not as simple a matter as comparing two databases. Intelematics send out alerts over the FM radio band, in an encrypted format, to notify its network users of known traffic incidents. This data is either just displayed on the head unit as an alert, or used by the routing algorithm to re-route an existing trip if it is determined that a faster route now exists due to delays.

So having a valid decryption key on a TMC compatible GPS system is the only way to make use of the data. Getting access to Intelematics database offline would be stale data and therefor useless.

Or just use Google maps with traffic overlay on your phone of course...

It'll need to have a "TELEMAT" (or something like that, i dont have the euro disc on hand) folder on the disc too

so is the tmc similar to the sirius travel-link and traffic option given here in the united states
if you guys want i can show ya what travel-link and traffic does... hold that thought.... time to make a video

Yes it's similar but broadcast over fm rather than sat radio. It's encrypted so needs to have a key bought by Vw from the provider of the traffic info.
Vw Australia unfortunately have a reputation for not listening to it's customers. So this feature has never been available here unlike in Europe.

Just wondering if having SUNA on golf mk7 would help in getting a working key? My new golf r was delivered with working suna on new navigation, maps are on SD Card.

I drove an Aurion in Perth with this feature last week and a BMW in the UK late last year. It's a real shame we can't get it.
