I don't know if this is a "check your prices" post or a NRMA are jerks post. I know I might be stating the obvious for some but here we go anyway.
Just got a green slip renewal for the van in the post with a letter explaining why the cost has gone up which I suppose was there to prepare you for the upcoming reaming...
For reference:
2011 - $459.95 (GIO)
2012 - $503.97 (NRMA)
And the renewal this year with NRMA was $788!! WTF?
The real kicker is that if you go on the NRMA website and re-quote it comes in at $638, still a big increase but a huge difference to the mailed renewal. Now that just pisses me off. How many people out there would accept and pay what is essentially a sucker tax for those who don't bother shopping around?
Of course going to the MAA website and running the quote across all providers sees the same rate from the NRMA but down to $505 from QBE (from memory).
Motor Accidents Authority - Green Slip Price Guide Form (http://prices.maa.nsw.gov.au/)
For me the only reason I ended up with an NRMA green slip at all was to get the discount on car insurance, at the time it was worth the extra $50 for the saving on the comprehensive policy. It's worth noting that their comprehensive was also competitive last year. Seems this year it might see me moving companies yet again. Jerks.
