View Full Version : Speakers to replace stock?
Hello everyone,
After the recent festival season, and have my car speakers on full volume at the camp site etc.
I have found they just sound crap now, it's almost muffled sometimes, rock songs I can faintly hear the singing behind the band etc.
Can anyone recommend speakers to replace my front and rear, or simply the front ones, that do not require an amp?
Just a simple swap-in, that will sound as good, if not better than stock?
Regards,
V

Cheaper to get a good set and amp, rather than attempt at matching or improving stock vw speakers without power.
sonicelectronix.com sells speakers/amps cheap most of the year, I would just say slim amp and decent speakers, will be less likely to have issues with blown speakers again as amplified speakers can handle higher dB without distortion.
But up to you depending on the effort you want to put in.

Another thing to note with sound quality - even with good speakers - the sound quality will only as good as the source file. Lower KBPS MP3's do sound muffled compared to 320/FLAC. mp3ornot.com (http://mp3ornot.com) (320 will sound brighter)
Also, I'd change the unit first - I'm not sure what unit it was changed to, but someone changed his unit and the difference in depth vs standard was amazing.

was all in good spirit, had most of the hill join us in a dance haha.
Hmm $600 is a bit much, and wiring an amp etc is just too much trouble/not worth it.
Well this is with radio, with mp3s it sounds pretty good, in fact almost not noticable.
And yes I have an RNS-510, so I don't really want to swap that out.
Any other ideas?

Golf mk5 GT Sport.
Pretty much just want to fix the sound.
Ive just bought some focal 165kp (2x woofer, 2x tweeter and 2 crossover units) to replace the front std speakers on my mkvi gti.
Trouble is now, not quite sure how to wire in the new crossovers that came with them ?
do i discard crossovers and simply replace the speakers (woofer & tweeter) ?, or
or do i run original woofer wiring into new crossover, then wire out to new woofer and tweeter from there ?
The head unit is the std RNS510
Any help/diagrams appreciated.....thanks

In simple,
Step 1:
Find the source positive and negitive going into woofer.
Step 2:
Mount these on the splitter box. will be names Positive and Negative in
Step 3:
Run cable from the splittle from the tweeter out to the tweeter, and woofer out to the woofer.
Step 4:
Find somewhere to mount splitter
Step 5:
Mount the Speaker
Use the factory splitter, it is designed to optomise those particular speakers

Thanks Swainey32, youve put my mind at ease.
Just one thing, your last line of reply referring to to using the "factory splitter", you mean the new crossover that came with the new speakers, i presume?................thanks again !!

lol sorry,
mind blank there, that was meant to say "use the new splitter" haha
each crossover set up is quiet different, you'll find some of the more expensive speakers have gigantic crossovers that I have no idea where to mount haha obviously better insulators and better components, regardless, your new crossover will be better than the factory.
Good luck, any questions post on here and I'll help you out, definitely a DIY able job :)
You'll also need some mdf spacers, can be had at autobarn for a few bucks each, easier than making yourself, you'll see when you pull door trim off that the speakers sit 5-6cm out from panel, if you straight mount onto door panel, you'll block your window from movement.
2x there 6" speaker spacers will do the job.
Also, just to help you understand, essentially what the crossover does is take an audio signal from the headunit and split the lower signals and sends to the woofer, and the high signals (like 70%+ of audible sounds) and send to tweeter.
