I have the MDI with an MDI-to-iPod cable in a Mk 6 Golf which works with the iPod generation 4. However, I have recently purchased an iPhone 5 and can't get it to be recognised by the MDI using a lightning male to 30-pin female adapter 8-Pin White Lightning Male to 30-Pin Female Adapter Cable (16.5cm) (http://dx.com/p/8-pin-lightning-male-to-30-pin-female-adapter-cable-white-16-5cm-164318). Has anyone managed to get their iPhone 5 working this way?
Bluetooth connection works fine ofcourse but I would prefer to use the head unit to control the songs and volume than trying to touch the correct button on the small phone screen.

Mine works fine. I originally bought the lightning cable head thingy of eBay that didn't work so I used the apple cable that came with my phone that works.

Use the 30 pin adaptor. Not the cable.
Using a 30pin lightning adapter (genuine apple one) and everything works as intended :)

The cable 8-Pin White Lightning Male to 30-Pin Female Adapter Cable (16.5cm) (http://dx.com/p/8-pin-lightning-male-to-30-pin-female-adapter-cable-white-16-5cm-164318) will not transfer audio /video. I think the only cable that will do it is the genuine Apple jobbie.

I thought the original cable is just USB to lightning.

Did you use the Apple product as I am considering this one Apple 30Pin Female to 8Pin Lightning Male Adapter for iPad Mini / iPhone 5 / iPod Touch 5 - Grey - Worldwide Free Shipping - DX (http://dx.com/p/apple-30pin-female-to-8pin-lightning-male-adapter-for-ipad-mini-iphone-5-ipod-touch-5-grey-182995) ?

At AUD35 I thought I would try cheaper alternatives first.

Many people have reported non genuine adapter doesn't work. So I bit the bullet and bought the genuine one, works flawlessly so worth it IMO

The lightning interface is a digital one. The MDI is an analog connection.
The adaptor that Apple builds actually has a small digital to analog converter so it maintains compatibility.

Yep there is actual hardware in the apple 30pin adapter, the Chinese ones are just wires. They'll only charge at best...
