Diesel pinging?

No, not my TDI, but a question that may appear dumb.
What is the diesel equivalent of pinging in the petrol engine?:?:

...a loud crunching sound followed by silence?

I'd have thought pre-ignition was a tad difficult in a diesel unless the timing was very wayward which in my experience usually means that pistons then eat valves

I've actually got no idea - thats why I asked ..

No, I'm not having any problems (touch wood), but it was just a question that I had no idea how to answer - so I thought I would ask.

Diesel knock, Detonation noise.
