Hey to every one this is my first post plz be kind :D

Well i wanted to know if i was one of the few that has a passion for these cars, i just wanted to know if neone else has a 70's audi 80 and if they did i think we should start a thread to gather a few images and a little more knowledge about the amount of these cars actually imported into australia, to my knowledge there isn't many around.... well heres a pic of my car

hope it works

Welcome, Nick. I remember these ... and yes, as an Audi. But I haven't seen any for ... well, decades really. Yours looks to be in good condition.

Cheers,

welcome 2 VWW

your car looks like a old golf or passat

doesnt looks like a audi

theres ingnorence for ya! have a nice B5 Passat but doesn't have a clue that there is a sequence to almost everything B1, B2, B3 etc etc.... now my Audi is an Audi 80/fox and it's a B1 and the passat is also a B1, the passat/dasher used the audi platform and created there own version of the car....... The Audi Fox is the history behind your car, It's wat put Audi on the map!

a true Audi enthuse!

sorry bout the poor pics... havent had much time to take pics of it as it has had the following done

- 80's poptop sunroof that was leaking replaced
- roof repainted
- now getting engine redone
- and cutting the rusted from the front drains, where the sound deadening stuff is

this is definatley an Audi not a Passat looks much better i think

DaveMack

Nick is right ... it's an AUDI!!!!! Used to see quite a few of these in NZ many long years ago.

you would think a 'Volks enthusiast' or any one on this forum would know, i thought i was going to have to get it imported after about a 2-3 years of searching and then found it at a wrecker, i love it, so much history and such a quality built car for it's time, "i use to own a 1997 mitsubishi magna and i believe my 1976 audi is a smoother and exciting ride"

Lukev85
09-09-2007, 11:50 PM
Sorry mate,

as you mentioned, the old audis and passats were identical from the front. I have a 75 Passat estate wagon and it has the same front grill as the front of your audi.

Do you have pics of the interior. Im curious as id like to see if they difffer in any other way.

Is she auto or manual?

BTW: Im all for the old audis. Like the LS Passat they are an extremely rare car.

Did you know that the LS Passat is considered the ugly duck of the audi fox lol

Nick_80
10-09-2007, 12:01 AM
haha sorry i would have to agree, i had the opportunity to grab a passat wagon and/or sedan but didn't like the look, to rephrase didn't like the look as much as the Audi

yer i got pick of the interior, real early one still at the wreckers sorry... have to do sumthing about my picture collection.. bit of a laze when it comes to it!!! here ya go, love to know ur all in for these rarities, quote "there an unhidden tressure"

i forgot to mention they have TS seats and shes a short shift manual

on the grill topic, my car is fully debadge sum little skaley wag must of thought the massive four rings across the grill would make a good momento in his bedroom, hint: try tracking a OEM badge haha laugh to myself, so i can see the confusion it brings

Lukev85
10-09-2007, 12:10 AM
Those recaro seats look great.

The TS seats are rare as in that condition (Just the a TS Passat). Usually they are ripped and worn out.

Does it have the TS recaro steering wheel. The previous owner of my Passat had one put on.

The grill on My Passat comes from a TS Passat too

Nick_80
10-09-2007, 12:16 AM
nope just a factory Audi steering wheel like on the ts passat but with the audi logo, i don't have it got taken out the wreck before i bought it, my brother has a TS wagon with a audi Fox grille on it! looks the part!

the point to this thread was to liven up all those vintage cars hidden away...

wat have you got under the bonnet?

yer i'm also surprised with the seat conditions, but the material seems to be viable for a few more years!

SoVeReIgN
10-09-2007, 12:21 AM
I have the grill of the front my car that has the oem (big) front 4 rings - If you were in Sydney i'd probably give it to you - Needs 4 rings on the front of it IMO!

Nick_80
10-09-2007, 12:24 AM

Lukev85
10-09-2007, 12:26 AM
Same, its great to see ppl actually out there you have a thing for the old audi and passats.

It has a big valve head, 1.9L rebuilt and balanced motor, twin 45 dellorto sidedraft webbers, massive cam, MSD ignition. The previous owner did all the work.

Its a beast

Here is some pics taken at the nationals. If you look around the forum you will find pic of it doing massive burnouts. The previous owner used to race it.

Nick_80
10-09-2007, 12:30 AM
do you have the short shift, been a 1975 a i'm guessing you have the floor shift manual,

my brother has a 1976 LS (wattle) with 1975 Round ended bumpers, ooo! ooo! and mines getting fully balanced 1608cc twin Dcoe, Big cam, 40.5 Intake valves, so yer should be a goer! just need to put it together, got my block back from been machined last week so soon enough

Nick_80
10-09-2007, 12:34 AM

Nice to see that there are some of these old girls left. Good work saving it from the wrecker.

There are a couple of bits, like the thrust washer in the end of the crank that would fit all passats from 1974-2004. Yours is indeed the start of the story.

The guy who owned Lukes Passat before him has an Audi Grille for your car with the rings on it. I`ll find out if he will sell it for you.

Nick_80
10-09-2007, 10:40 AM
yer i'm very interested in the badge for the grille

there two types of gril, theres a aluminium grille with the badge cast into it and theres a plastic grille with a plastic chrome badge, i'm just after the badge, but any help would be appreciated....

Nick_80
12-09-2007, 07:00 PM
thought since i was gaining a little interest with my automobile i thought i would share with you the complexities i had from the start

the original sunroof the previous owner put it, leaked like no 2morrow!

http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=434

after i got fed up with the water dropping onto my head and i had to drive to one side of my seat i descided enough was enough and to get this problem sorted! went though all the options of filling the hole, replacing it with similar pop top sunroofs (similar leaking problems would then occur later) desided to go looking at steel sunroofs out of E30's etc etc but ended up been rusted to big, wrong curve etc etc,

ended up with a sunroof out of a Honda fits like a glove! heres the pic

http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=435

Mate i emigrated from Scotland it was a 1990 20v jobbie 300bhp! was a great thing. I remember when i did sunroofs mate, the guy that showed me what to do cut a roof too big and the glass fell through hehehe never forget that one . Good thing for oversize glass hey!!!!

Nick_80
12-09-2007, 09:12 PM
i'll have to get more pics, we actually formed the roof, so it was a factory mounted item apposed to cutting a hole and clamping a sunroof to the hole

Hi Nick,
going by your pics
your audi is actually a 1974/75 AUDI FOX !!!
the colour is called martini olive and was available only,
on early audi fox and passat, meaning 1974/75.
audi fox was changed to AUDI 80 for the new model, new shape
in 1977!!!
I was working for VW/ AUDI back then and drove your model
brand new! YES, very exciting cars to drive with amazing handling and
cornering!
good luck with your interisting project!

CHEERS.

Nick_80
18-11-2007, 04:39 PM
yup definatly NOT a 74/75... its a december built 1976 and it's got the shortshift.... which is correct because they where on 75 onwards, don't know where u got ur information from but yer back to the books, nice try

as for the colour, yer thats also original

WTF!!! ;) ;)

the face lift was in late 78 i'm pretty sure

Hi Nic,
Very nice car you have there. treat it well and it will run forever. by the pics I have seen it looks like you are doing just that.
I don't mean to intrude on your thread, but I had to start somewhere as I just registered.
Checking you guys (blokes) out from the USA here.
I remember the old Audi's very well. In fact I had quite a fuss over an old 100 that I had to re install the engine and gearbox in that I had not removed! Damn that was back in 1971 I thinking so it had to be a late 60's model. Inboard calipers and discs not out on the wheel axle.
I know many of the model numbers and names were different here verses the "Euro" models and I suspect the same is true of models marketed down under.

AUDI 100 as far as I know was just that never a VW based version of it here.
Audi Fox also was sold as a VW Dasher (your Passat) Back in the 70's.

I owned a 71' Dasher Wagon, it was originally diesel powered but when I bought it it had been re powered with a 1500cc carb engine. I wish I still had that one.
It snows here, sometimes deep enough to be up to the door bottom and that car was so predictable and almost unstoppable.
I had cut my teeth on VW typ 1 Beetles, typ2 Bus, had a Karman Ghia, and tossed in for good measure, a few two stroke (dare I mention it here) SAAB's.
At present I own a 1989 Audi 80.
I have the CIS injection on it, and I have got to tell you, we are mandated to fuel our cars with blended petro and 10% alcohol, and that CIS system will develop leaks because it was never intended to cope with alcohol (least the 89's). So currently I am going to attempt a carburetor conversion.
I thought I would join this forum even though your on the other side of this planet, just to see how you blokes go about things!
Take good care,
Best regards,
Craig

I picked up my new (12th 81') Audi 5+5 the yesterday. Great trims except one tear on back seat and cracked dash, faded paint and all I can find in that is maybe the qauter had a repair and blend paint, otherwise stock.
$200. I couldnt be happier, Ive had one before, but this one doesnt seem to have the electrical gremlins like it did. It also hs an Audi 90 engine 2.3 litre in it.
I have a few things to do before it gets back on the road like brakes!!!! peddle goes to the floor! all the fluids and change the little 13's on it to the 14's I have for my golf. (Hope its the same pattern!!! hahahaha)

I agree mate the DZ 4 cyl kjet was a great car. Never had any serious issue with them apart from when Shell brought out unleaded for the first time in the UK. Every second vehicle coming in ad the head off with burnt valves. I was only an apprentice then and all we had was an old decoke stick and paste hey!!!!! i done them things till i was blue in the face. Ah i must not forget rear trailing arm bushes tut tut tut man they were a pain too. Nothing else though so mate it can stand against any of the new stuff any day!!

Great Pics Nick80, I never knew there was a two door Fox!!! And am so glad to see a 80 (aka 5+5) 2 door in race spec!!!

My uncle used to own a VW Audi BMW specialist years ago and he told me how the 5+5 (80) came as Quattro before the 'Quattro' came out, but you were only able to buy that model in Germany. (The Quattro was based on the 5+5 (80) floor plan)
I wonder if the 80 (5+5) came in a 2 door?
And, where can I get hold of the bits to convert my 5+5 (80) into a Quattro. (My uncle has told me its posible by just bolting the parts straight up) Does anyone here have experience in that type of mod, ide really appreciate some feed back on this before I start buying parts from over seas. Thanks

Again, great pics Nick!!!!

you'd need to get running gear froma quattro, I believe. But um, yea, good luck with that... Tim (golfworx) breiflty flirted with the idea, but he deemed it too expensive, and complicated though. ( from memory, but don't quote me)

It would be tough to do, but Uber cool!!

Yeah, My uncle said the best bet Ide have is to get someone who speaks fluent german and contact a german wrecker to see what I can find. He also had aspirations of doing the same, but then he bought a house...
I get the bus or a lift to work, so a dead car doesnt bother me, but two...(Anyone want a MKI in primer? haha)

It is possible to convert a fwd Audi 80 or 5+5 to quattro but you will need all this to do it properly, by the way it is not a BOLT on affair

Front Anti-rollbar
Front Anti-rollbar drop links
Front subframe
Brake proportioning valve and mounting bracket
Exhaust Manifold
Exhaust downpipe
quattro Gearbox
Gearshifter mechanism
Gearshifter boot, lever and knob
Clutch assembly
Pedal box
Hydrolic clutch assembly
Propshaft/tailshaft assembly
Front driveshafts
Front-to-rear brake line
Handbrake lever and boot
Center exhaust box
Rear exhaust box
Underbody heatshields
Rear subframe
Rear Differential assembly
Rear driveshafts
Rear calipers
Rear disks
Rear Strut assemblies
Handbrake cables
Brakeline T piece
Rear brake hoses
Rear screen (quattro script in heater element)
Rear side windows (quattro decals)
Petrol tank
Trunk / Boot carpets
Cabin carpets, front and rear
Fuel accumulator
Fuel pump and fuel pipe protection covers
4 new wheels/alloys as quattro's are 4x108 stud pattern

Now you also need the lower front bulkhead assembly from a quattro. The ENTIRE floorpan from the quattro. You also need the bootfloor from a quattro. Plus the rear inner wheel arches with the correct upper strut mount locations. From a quattro.

So if you can aquire all this parts you're also going to need access to some sort of frame rebuilding jig, as half the bodyshell has to be cut out.
Strip pretty much everything off the 80 or 5+5. Cut out the lower front bulkhead, the floor pan, and the trunk floor. And the rear inner wheel arches.
Weld in all the replacement parts. Repaint, and then all you have to do is to re-assemble the entire car.............

Also if you want to go 5 cylinder 10v or 20v you will need to cut the engine mounts out of the quattro, as the 5 cylinder doesnt bolt to the subframe like the 4 cylinder does.

Like I said its possible, I thought long and hard about doing it to mine when i was in the UK, even had a damaged 90 quattro lined up, but in the end i decided my Audi 80 was to good to cut up, you would be better of trying to find a type 85 Audi 90 quattro and putting the small 80 or 5+5 bumpers on it,
There was a 1985 Audi 90 quattro on ebay a while ago, jap import,red,5cylinder it didnt sell so maybe still available??

Hope that helps
Ian

Well sort off, what he did was put the type 81/fox body on a shortened type 85 quattro chassis,
What the owner did is quite mad, you should see the build photo's
There is a huge build up thread, will look for it

After work today I went through the 'Caroliner' (Caroliner is a vehicle pulling/measuring system) index and printed out the data sheets for 3 Audi 80's, and 2 Quattro's.
What I discovered was very interesting. Both the 80 and Quattro (even up to 85-86 models) are the same in specs up until the 'Centering point' (where the car is first measured / where trailing arms meet the floor). Its only after the centering point that the rear rail sections and everything joined is different. Wheel base is the same, but the sedan (80) has a longer boot floor from what I am reading.

Does anybody on here own or know someone who owns an original Quattro? And if you do, could you please ask the owner kindly if they are willing to bring there car in to my work for a couple hours to let me measure it? (A Saturday)
The car will be put on the Caroliner, but will not be clamped, only measured.
(A bonus for the owner to see how strait there car really is)

I am willing to pay the owner of the car being measured, and as long as its ok with the boss, am willing to demonstrate to other VW Watercoolers how a car is measured before its pulled back into shape.

Ide really appreciate any feedback!

i've been thinking about the feed back on the polo wheels, and since everyone is in deep discretion i have re-considered. i think i want to go back to a full classic restoration maybe even some spoked wheels, has it been done?

i'm thinking i'll get sum 14" by 4 and white wall tyres

maybe sumthing like this to keep an original classic appearance!

that's damn nice mate! she go alright I'm geussing??

"go alright" will be replaced with "causes much pain and suffering"...

that pic was taken when it hadn't been out of garage for a good while... what you can't see in the pic... is that the boot light is on... and stays on... grrr. and that was the last time it was driven till today (well last night as well)... grrr. but this morning the light globe got pulled... hopefully no more flat batteries. It looks like... or its an earth, that the wack in the bum means when the boot is closed the boot light switch doen't fully depress, light stays on... battry drains, alarm goes off, battery flat dead as can be...

so:
1 have others guys insuarnce fix DENT... which seems to be taking F-O-R-E-V-E-R!
2 have my insurance fix my dent:???: that i put in it driving into garage just then baaaa
3. fix boost problem
4 bottom end rebuild
5 if 4 drive happily forever, if not 4, sell

Dahlback didnt build this, it was built by Martinson racing.
It has a 3b 5cyl 20v Turbo motor with a sport quattro head, 750hp @ 7500 rpm
Gen 1 quattro system,
Runs the quarter mile in 9.75 seconds.

Thats a old pic, will post some new ones

Basically yes, it looks like a type 81 prob 1984, orginally it would have been a non turbo 5cyl 10v, with the first gen quattro (cable diff locks)
