16v's in the VW range include:

KR 1.8L 16v good cams and large bore intake, good for 102kw. Very revy.

KL 1.8L 16v same as a KR with tame cams and a small bore intake, had about 125hp, less power than KR but had more low down torque.

6a and 9a 2L 16v's practically the same but a 6a is longditudinally mounted. They're a torquey low power motor. Short stroke large bore. Also known as a bubble block.

ABF 2L 16v out of mk3 euro gti and seat cupra sports 110kw had slightly wilder cams than the KR(corrected thanks to Valver). Has a long stroke and small bore. Is a tall block.

Ofcourse I'm leaving out the Mk5 motors and any other motor that would be similarly out of reach (mk5 polo 16v etc).

All the 2.0 16vs actually have the same bore and stroke. The 236mm block height in the ABF is taken up by 159mm lon rods, rather than 144mm ones in the short motors :)

The ABF also has the hottest cams of all - look at the valve lift especially  :

Intake Cam: Duration 219 deg @ 1mm, 10.8mm maximum valve lift

Exhaust Cam: 220 deg @ 1mm, also 10.8mm maximum valve lift

Versus KR cams:

Intake: Duration: 218 @ 1mm, 9.6mm lift

Exhaust: Duration: 226 @ 1mm, 10.21mm lift

It's the one to go for, but also the hardest to fit

I know one for sale.... BUT.... i cant tell ya because I might want to buy it myself

I have a few KR 1.8 16vs and one 9a 2L 16v. Come over and have a go in my Mk1 16v. That`ll decide you that you want one.

The motor is easy to bolt in, the only hard bits are wiring and I have complete looms and the petrol tank and fuel pump. They are the only additional parts you will need.

Thats right, Valver I had forgotten about that one.

Thanks for the reply guys... Seeing that i dont to engineer it im thinking that the KR will be the way to go.. and want it to be as simple as possible.

gonna head down to Loons and have a go in one... Cant wait!

So is it a mk2 golf? Otherwise if it's a mk1 you'll have to engineer it with any 16v conversion.

Its Mk1... Thought if it was 0.2L above original capacity then it doesnt have to engineered

Set back... There was a bit of rust on the floor so i went to fix it and it is everywhere...might have to start a new car! dont know if its worth fixing ARGH!

If there's more than a 10% increase in power or torque then you need to get it engineered. At least in Victoria.

But would anyone really know..... I mean, a cop is hardly going to know, especially with old cars and the engine bays being dirty and all.

I wouldnt bother with a cert :?

If the car already has a 1.8 in it and on the papers. I`d just get a 1.816v and change the engine. An easier form and then you are all legal on paper. I`d just say its a GTI motor, here are the papers. Cops dont know much about old golfs anyway.

The rust needs fixing. A good welder could cut that out and weld in plates.

yo gas definatly go the kr 16v its a rad moter dude.... and i agree change it on the papers it makes it easier, and to deal with the cops after they track down your golf which is faster than a coppers tank, beware with a 16v you will get in to trouble...hahaha
