I will shortly become an owner of a lovely roc R, and was thinking about putting on the VWR CAI and some tune to go with it.

The other option I was looking at was the Carbonio from APR, but essentially doesn't actually seem to change much, and VWR might be the better option. Was mainly looking for a bit more induction noise, and i'm not sure how the APR goes in that respect, but I assume the VWR will do what I'm after. I realise the actual power increases would be fairly low with either.

The advantage to the APR is keeping the engine cover, however I see some people using an audi tts cover as a substitute or cutting the original.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with either option.

In the case of modding the original, how easy it is to cut, noticeable if you went back to the original airbox, possible price for replacement?
In the case of the audi cover is just a straight swap... are the audi rings removable from the audi cover, price etc.

Thanks

The Carbonio is useless, I had one and it does absolutely nothing. You'll get some nice gains from the VWR Intake and a far better sound. Then grab an Audi TT-S Engine cover from BKS Tuning (cheapest I've come across).

IMO, the best idea would be to grab the VWR Intake and the TT-S Engine cover. That way if you ever wish to go back you don't have to source a second-hand OEM cover. Just de-badge the TT-S one and put some VW stuff on it if you wish to keep the VW look.

You can also buy a fully converted TT-S cover designed to look like a VW one from Tarmac Engineering if you're willing to spend the coin: Custom FSI Engine Cover (http://www.tarmacengineering.com.au/index.php/online-shop/product/22-custom-fsi-engine-cover)

VWR sounds like the way to go then. Thanks for the link to the Tarmac, fairly pricey, but BKS tuning one seems like the go, i handle the rings. If its this one (http://www.bks-tuning.com/epages/17141421.sf/en_US/?ObjectPath=/Shops/17141421/Products/AUTTE034) is that all that is required?

Yep, that's exactly it. No trimming needed, just use your existing rubber bungs that hold your engine cover in place.

You'll be more than happy with the results.

I'm running the VWR CAI in my Scirocco and don't have an engine cover.

Is there any particular reason you want an engine cover, aside from making it pretty?

635 is cheap, what supplier was that?

The engine cover yea, just for the sake of being pretty really. Obviously not required, but I think the engine without the cover looks fairly ugly. Not that i'm opening the bonnet every few minutes, but I think i'd prefer it just for my own sake.

i'm with you on this one, it looks damn ugly with no engine cover so i would also want one.
also interested in where it can be had for $635 delivered

Clean your Engine Bay and add some goodies like the R8 Oil Cap and maybe some Carbon bits. Then you might like it. ;)

each to their own though, and i suppose unless you are showing off the engine bay you wouldnt care too much anyways.

I must admit, the VWR looks a lot cleaner than my Twintake.

To be honest that actually looks pretty good, maybe I was comparing to my Polo, which is pretty messy underneath the cover. I haven't picked up the Scirocco yet, so I'll make a judgement when I get it.

JohnA - I found these guys... uspmotorsports (https://uspmotorsports.com/VWR2.0TFSITransverseColdAirIntakeSystem/GolfR.html), who are a little more expensive than another one I found, however there shipping is much cheaper than the other mob, and should be about 620 landed. I think i might get the short shift kit too, for about 870 total. They will do the oil catch can, just getting a price on them, however it would have to be a separate order otherwise I will get charged gst. I'll keep you informed if i place an order, make sure they are reliable.

Thanks for the link mate. Will definately have to order one and just keep it in the shed till i get each piece i want. Then do it all in one hit with the tune :)

Have a look here for a near-new catch can. all you need to complete the kit for a Golf/Scirocco R is the PCV plate, manifold tap and hoses - all of whichyou can source through Carformance for about $100. http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/showthread.php?t=82512

For anyone interested, I placed an order via uspmotorsports. They came back to me saying VWR won't let them ship to australia. So i've taken to using a redirect service (priceusa.com.au) which i've used before.

Also because i don't have to worry about shipping out of the US, i went to an alternative site (Auto Parts Store | Performance Car Accessories | Autotuningstore (http://www.autotuningstore.com)) who are cheaper than usp, but i passed on because of high shipping costs. Expecting to be about $900 landed for the intake + short shift. Again will keep anyone interested informed as to how the company is.

My plan RRRRIT is to use the mail redirect service. So that autopartsstore site will ship for free @ 559usd to us addres, then hopefully they will ship over to us for about the same price as the first website (70usd) and it should actually come out about the same if not a little cheaper. Not only is the postage on autopartsstore outrageous, but they might have the same issue where VWR tell them they can't ship to australia.

That's exactly what I did with mine. Price, including shipping turned out to be a hair below USD

Just had the VWR intake put in by Prestige Auto Works in Airport West, VIC.

Looks fantastic and sounds even better.

Great service from Raz and his team. Highly recommend!
