Ready for running its first race: The new Formula 3 engine from Volkswagen will celebrate its racing début during the DTM weekend on the Nürburgring (31 Aug -02 Sep).

For its comeback as an engine supplier, Volkswagen initially equips three vehicles in the Formula 3 Euro Series. Maximilian Götz from Uffenheim (Germany) and Jonathan Summerton from the United States contest the series for the Italian Team RC Motorsport, while Marco Holzer from Augsburg (Germany) competes for AM Holzer Rennsport, using the new two-litre engine delivering about 210 hp of the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer.

"The new Formula 3 engine from Volkswagen has completed many hours of rig testing and reeled off plenty of test kilometres on the track. Now it’s time to test it in direct competition,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "The first races are intended to help us assess where we stand and to give us new information we can use in the unit’s evolution for the coming season."

The new Formula 3 powerplant is based on a two-litre engine that delivers 150 hp in the production version, which is available for various models of the Volkswagen Group. With its high content of light-metal materials, robust design and compact build, the four-cylinder powerplant possesses a wealth of favourable prerequisites for use in Formula racing.

Plenty of test kilometres

A large part of the track tests with the new engine was handled by Jonathan Summerton. "Power and performance of the Volkswagen engine are already at a high level. I’m eager to see where we stand compared with the competition,” said the 19-year-old from Florida, who celebrated a victory in the Formula 3 Euro Series last year and represented the USA in the A1 GP series in winter.

Prior to the start of the race weekend at the Nürburgring an official test day with three hours of additional track time will be on Thursday’s agenda. Maximilian Götz: "The possibility to test suits us well because it allows us to work out the optimal set-up for our car without being pressured by time," commented the 21-year-old from Franconia who, like Summerton, has ample experience in Formula 3 and is a new member of Team RC Motorsport. Marco Holzer, on the other hand, competes with his previous team, directed by father Ronald. "The collaboration with Volkswagen is a major step forwards for us,” said the 19-year-old Marco Holzer.

Making its comeback as an engine supplier, Volkswagen builds on a successful history in Formula 3: Between 1979 and 1991 as many as seven drivers celebrated the title win in the German Formula 3 Championship with Volkswagen. In addition, there were numerous international titles and several exploits in the famous Formula 3 Grands Prix of Monaco and Macao.

Strong début for new Volkswagen Formula 3 engine

The new Volkswagen Formula 3 engine has made its successful racing début during the DTM weekend at the Nürburgring.

In the Formula 3 Euro Series race on Saturday Maximilian Götz in his Dallara F306 Volkswagen from Team RC Motorsport clinched sixth place, thus scoring points in the début race straight away. On Sunday the driver from Uffenheim claimed ninth place, thus finishing in the top ten for the second time. In the qualifying practice Götz and his team-mate Jonathan Summerton had already made a strong first showing with positions eight and 13.

"We’re highly satisfied with the début of our new Formula 3 engine: it’s competitive straight from the start. This was also proved by our fastest race lap, we were separated from the absolute best time by merely three tenths of a second. A big compliment to our engineers, teams and drivers who made this good start possible by working so intensively," commented Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "Our goal is to equip six racing cars with our engines next year and to contest all races of the Formula 3 Euro Series. The results of this season’s events give us the opportunity to assess where we stand and to pursue the engine’s evolution for 2008."

Maximilian Götz praised the 210-hp two-litre engine. "The tests had suggested what potential the engine has but now we know much better where Volkswagen stands compared to the competition- We’re very close already,” said the 21-year-old. In the first race Götz advanced from grid position eight to sixth place. "A perfect début and a great reward for everyone involved in this project." Götz started the race on Sunday from third place – the top eight in the first race start to the second event in reverse order. "After the start I hit the brakes too late, which cost me five places. After that, I was able to keep the pace of the experienced drivers very well."

For Jonathan Summerton, the DTM weekend in the Eifel did not go according to plan. "In the first race I was hit after the start. My car was damaged in the incident and, as a result, very difficult to drive,” the American summed up the event after finishing in 18th place. The start to the second race was similar to the first one: "I was hit again, this time the rear wing was damaged. Nevertheless, my car had very good balance and my laps were fast and consistent,” the 19-year-old said about the race that saw him finish in 15th position.

A third Dallara "powered by Volkswagen" driven by Marco Holzer is fielded by Team AM Holzer Rennsport. "Our weekend wasn’t off to an optimum start. But the collaboration with Volkswagen is paying off: in the end, we came up with a good set-up,” commented the 19-year-old from Augsburg, who occupied places 20 and 14.

I very much doubt that vw will be thinkin of gettin into formula one cause that is massive massive money.

VW have been in racing for many many many years dating back to the 70's with the formula 2 cars and are still used as seen in formula 3 cars.

I actually race against the formula 2 cars in the state champs in NSW and next year there will be some older formula 3 cars as well, and they are all still running the 1.6 VW golf motor and they still go pretty hard.

Cheers

How did u get into formula 2?

I raced go karts for 6 years, and my dad had a supersports car (the car in my avatar pic) which is pretty much like a smaller version of a lemans car. I race against the formula 2's in the CAMS NSW State Championship.

Cheers

Yea that be about right for karts but a better option would be to get a CAMS L2S licence which is pretty cheap. Then you can run your car in supersprints and club events and things like that.

Go to cams.com.au i think it is and have a look but its a pretty crappy website haha but if u want some more info dont hesitate to give me a buzz

I've been racing karts for 12 years now.. 3 grand will get you in at entry level with an OK kart, but that's about it..

If you're just looking to have fun, my advice would be to get a cams license and go run your car in some super sprints etc, more fun with less hassles and no damage unless you wipe yourself out in a big way or break something...

After running at the front in karts for years and putting up with all the BS that goes on at race meets, i'm building a mk1 16 valve to go to super sprints etc in. Much nicer people without the politics.

You're better off to go do super sprints etc imo. Everyone has fun and you can just race against yourself and work on improving yourself without all the stress of everything else.. Even if you start off with a street car.

But hey, it's your dosh, do what you want.
