View Full Version : RCD510 MDi Help?

Hi all,
Purchased an RCD510 (I believe genuine, reconditioned) from a regular seller of such on eBay, and have installed it into the Tig with no hassles at all (extremely happy with how easy it was!).
Only one little problem I'm having - the seller supplied a USB cable to connect iPod/iPhone etc. and I can (and do) use that, however...
I have a factory-installed MDi, and the RCD510 is not 'talking' to the MDi and will not recognise it. Additionally, the USB connection continues to charge the iPod even when the car is switched off which concerns me re. flat battery issues (for the car - don't care about the iPod)
I contacted the seller and he stated 'Unfortunately, you gotta programme the unit to enable the MDI interface of it....'
I've got no problem with the seller - he's been great - but I don't want to have to take the unit back out, send it interstate and get him to reprogram it then send it back again.
Is anybody aware if this 'reprogramming' can be done via VCDS/VagCom? And can the constant charging of the iPod when the car is off be amended so it doesn't occur? If so, is there anybody around the Brisbane area who might be able to help me with this?

The MDI needs the dedicated iPod cable for it to work. It will display a connection error on your Apple device.
i.e. this: VW RCD510 AMI AUDI RNS510 MEDIA-IN MDI Interface Adapter Cable for iPod iPhone | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VW-RCD510-AMI-AUDI-RNS510-MEDIA-IN-MDI-Interface-Adapter-Cable-for-iPod-iPhone-/121041673475?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c2ea55d03&_uhb=1)
You can code the CAN-bus gateway to say that it's got the RCD510 instead of the 310, but as far as I'm concerned, it makes little to no difference in the grand scheme of things.

I do have the iPod-specific MDi Cable - like a schmuck, I purchased it via VW when I ordered the car (you live & learn from these mistakes...hindsight is wonderful thing... ) however from what the RCD510 seller says, it's (the lack of connectivity from MDi to RCD510) a programming issue in the RCD itself. Just wanted to have it all neat & tidy, and how it was functioning with my RCD310, rather than dangling a USB cable into my glovebox, and would like to see the Track Info etc on the MFD again. I'll check out the VagCom-users link though (thanks lunchboxGTI). Appreciate the help guys.

I did this retrofit a while back and didn't have an issue. No recoding required in my case. MDI worked when I connected up RCD510 - no reprogramming required in my case so I guess I'm lucky.

I guess this is the same issue I am having with the Chinese RCD510 on my 2011 GTI, the RCD 510 also came with the supplied USB cable but I did not connect it.
Seems like the MDI isn't connected or seeing it. I posted this over VWVortex, if you can get a vcds scan of what yours is doing it, I'd like to see if you are receiving the same codes as me. From what it seems, I cannot establish connection with the media player, and I assume this is the MDI module. I've tried what looks like selecting it, but it looks like it wont let me in VCDS. Over at golfmk6 in another thread another user got a chinese rcd510 and has a picture showing the media in and MDI working.
VWVortex.com - Installed Chinese market RCD 510 onto a 2011 GTI, MDI doesnt work and have fault codes (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5918682-Installed-Chinese-market-RCD-510-onto-a-2011-GTI-MDI-doesnt-work-and-have-fault-codes)

I know mine was a genuine RCD510 as it came from a VW dealer who pulled it from a new Amorak - upgrade to SatNav system prior to delivery.
I suspect that there's a few aftermarket Chinese copies floating around the place with software/hardware that's not fully supporting all the functions.
Anyway if it's some use to you guys here's the VCDS scan of the useful bits:

I wonder if it is headunit related and there are several versions of the Chinese rcd 510, I am thinking it is a headunit issue after messing with VCDS. I am currently talking to my seller also about the same issue and have shown him the pictures of both headunits and waiting for his response
By any chance can you get pictures of both headunits the back? I have a feeling you have the same RCD 510 as me with the extra USB connector in the back.
This is what mine looks like.

Well it looks like I might be lucky (or maybe I just haven't hit a compatibility issue), however have just googled "RCD510 mdi problem" and there's heaps of hits on various forums about this issue.
Suggest you go hunting and see what you can dig up.
I only use an external hard drive run through the USB connector on my MDI and this works fine. I also have an iphone connector cable but I don't use this - my wife has an iphone but haven't heard any issues from her.

Well, yep - it looks as though I have the Chinese version - it looks the same as your first (top) pic. I don't have an issue with that - at the price I paid it's totally acceptable! My MDi is in the centre console of the Tiguan (similar to how yours in the GTI is). Am still waiting to hear from the seller re. whether it can be done via VCDS etc. or if I would need to send the whole unit back for 'reprogramming' as he put it.
Tigger, thanks for the VCDS tips - if I can go down this route to sort it, it will definitely be handy, and will do some scouting around in the meantime. Happy New Year to all :o)

MDI will work with Bosch RCD 310 & 510 units fitted as std in Europe,SA, Aus and some other markets without any additional coding required. The yellow plug that looks like the old PS2 plug is used as a USB only input. Suggest try and get someone in the USA (Dana@rosstech?) for the correct coding of Chinese made Delphi unit (as photo above)as these are fitted as std in both the Chinese and the NAR market.
Aw614 Please tell Dana you have an MDI fitted and had sat radio module previously installed with your old RCD 310. You will have to disable the sat radio module in the canbus module 19 and physically disconnect the power to the sat radio module if you want to permanently remove the error in module 19. the radio module 56 will have to be told there is a MDI attached and This should remove the errors in these two modules.
There are also some Delphi units that do not support the telephone book option not sure which ones but they may account for some errors in your telephone module 77

Bamazonke:
Thanks for the input I'll probably message dana over at vwvortex, and I'll probably disable the sat radio as it is something I dont use and see what happens.
Roscoe1974: If you can get a scan of your vcds, you think you can find out if your "media player 3" option cannot be found? I think this is the MDI in vcds and it looks like it isn't communicating
This is what I get on my autoscan with the rcd510

With the RCD 310:
Hey aw614,
I'll get in touch with someone local in the early new year and see if I can grab a VCDS scan when they're able, and will report back. Thinking of buying a VCDS cable myself, but I fear for my sanity if I do - I'm sure I'll fall down the 'rabbit hole' of trying too many things and my Tig will end up being an immobile heap of crap in the garage! (errrmm...I love my car, don't get me wrong, I just know I'll go that one step too far, and the Tig will probably self-destruct!)

Keep me posted please as I'm having the same problem. I don't have a chinese 510, I have the new 'B' model, fresh from a new car. I've seapped for the 310 in my 2011 multivan but it doesn't see the MDI or give me any on screen options.
