Lakeside Laps v12 - 20 January 2013

Alrighty people, round 12!
Lakeside raceway again for breakfast ($25)
The Breakfast starts at 7:30/8am and we should be out on the track by 8:30am after a safety briefing.
I will be there from about 7:15 and would recomend that people aim to get there by 7:20am.

Rules:
Note: this is not a dedicated track event, people have been warned previously about their driving conduct and as a result we have been pulled off early.
No PPE gear required (i.e. no need for a helmet, fireproof long sleaved shirt etc). I would recommend shoes though.
No undercutting to overtake on the corners. Only overtake on straight sections of the track.
If you are not overtaking anyone on the straight stay to one side (the left) of the track and let quicker cars (clio, Blue TTS, 335i etc) overtake.
All vehicles that enter must be road-worthy and registered.

People other than the driver:
People who wish to split the driving are required to pay the same amount as the driver.
People who wish to passenger do not have to pay unless they want breakfast.
People who wish to watch from trackside do not have to pay unless they want breakfast.

I am having this open to Euro cars and you can invite family members (no friends this time sorry) if they are in Euro cars as well.
Anyone can come and passenger with you.


I am capping the numbers at 25 cars in order to keep the event fun and not have traffic delays.

When the main list is full, nominations will go on the reserve list and when/if someone pulls out you get moved form reserve into the main list. Unfortunatley if you do not make it to the main list we can't accomodate you at the event but if there are any forum members remaining on the reserve list by the cut-off date i will place them on the main list when i organise the next one in order to give a fair spread.

Please let me know if you are coming and how many people you will be bringing with you for catering purposes.

I thought that if you are worried about getting caught, maybe we should take our licence plates off when we get there. I've seen a couple of people do this already as a precaution. OR you could tell me if you don't want your car being uploaded online in a picture. Thanks.

If you dont wish to take them off, Ill grab some white and black Electrical tape and you can change your licence number to something else.......

I generally do this & think it's a good idea. I didn't have time at the last one (arrived late), but normally pull the plates before going out in case anything happens. Insurance co's are known to float around racetracks (or at least have access to photos) that they use in case they suspect a claim is dodgy.

Yeah I took my plates off when under warranty and had a few suspension related claims with worn mounts and strut top bearings. If you're worried, need to cover your rego sticker to.

I think being a Happy Lap event, there will not any age restrictions as passengers but it also mean you need to be 200% more careful

As far as I am aware there is no age limit for passengers.
55ASI GTI took her two kids out on the 2nd or 3rd one we did and Lakeside were fine with it.

Great morning out on the track. Although a bit warm for my poor tyres, however my brakes have bed in properly since the last happy laps so my wheels didn't look insanely coated in brake dust. Dad took heaps of pics and spectator POV videos (over 3 cameras D: ), on one camera the whole happy laps is recorded from spectator POV but the focus went a bit fuzzy for some reason. Also filmed onboard with the go pro.

I improved my racing line through corners a little better this time and using the whole width of the track when I could/needed to. I'm still ecstatic at how well my little DS3 Sport handles the track :cool:

Onboards, speccy vids and pics will be up this afternoon going onto tomorrow as well.

Big thanks again to Clay for organising these great events. :)

Also I overheard someone talking about my car looking like 'Brum' from that kid's TV show before breakfast hahaha. I must say I haven't thought about it looking like Brum until I heard it.

Clay, Thanks again for organising these events and the work involved to communicate it to everyone. Another fun morning, if a little warm.

Was quite a bit of traffic so only one clean lap. Ben, apart from the lap below, the first few were otherwise the quickest at around 76sec. I tried recording through the iphone, the phone mount is terrible so the video is ordinary and shakey. It's ordinary vid to bother up loading 30mins, you'll feel crook watching it. I overlaid the telemetry from my gtech lap timer to the video, it's a little out but near enough. Perhaps a better phone mount would make this better. I also uploaded in reasonably low resolution, 640 x 900 or something.

I think I improved my lines way better than last time and my gear changes were HEAPS better than last happy laps, especially downshifting with a bit of heel and toe :) Although I had to have a few cool down laps throughout the session as I could really feel sludgyness and numbness (making cornering slower) through the steering as the tyres became too hot.

Yeh, I got the manual turbo model of the DS3 back at the end of novemeber. I got tempted into the massive savings on the DS3 turbos at the end of year sales. The extra power certainly helps to overtake people and I probably don't annoy as many people as I used to when I exit corners either haha.

Still need the 205 back on the track though to have a fellow frenchie to drive with :D

No worries mate. I'm down for the next one. I've been buying up too. Got a MegaSquirt to put together, Quad LS1 coils and throttle bodies. Just doing some painting whilst i build the MS and by the middle of the year I should have it all in and tuned. The missus went APE ***** when she saw all this stuff arrive....

I apologize if I held people up too much through the corners, have only owned the car a week and have never driven RWD on the track before (dont even have it insured yet either), so was taking it super easy most of the time, would hold back every few laps down the straight to let people pass, was pretty impressed that it would keep up/pull away from at least half the cars out there though on the straights, not bad for something 27 years old ;)

Great video Machine, I miss your overlays though. They were really handy for learning the lines.

Just an fyi, keep some space guys. The person in front of you can't go faster if you're up their chuff, cause if they mess up and need to brake you'll be in the back of them. Just slow down and chill til the straight.

The car's scary fast now.
The last one I did with this exhaust was Lakeside in December. 3-inch from turbo to tips with a valve that bypasses the muffler under throttle. If you heard it then and it sounds different now, it could be for a number of reasons:

1. Because the downpipe was slightly longer then and wasn't a good fit so they sent me a new, slightly shorter one. Exact same design though.

2. Because I've since added a high pressure fuel pump, larger intercooler and high flow air filter.

3. Because you cleaned the wax out of your ears. :stickpoke:

I have used CMS laptimer to provide GPS data (not the stuff above), but have found 1hz processing from the phone to not be accurate for speed. CMS isn't the most user friendly, but if you want some basic telemetry it adds to the amusement. I downloaded it for 99c from itunes store.

Some observations from the spectator video:

Jeez that Honda is loud, you get doppler happening for like 10 seconds after it leaves the screen.

2:43 APR's GTI sounds like a fighter jet and spins third on the straight.
2:57 and 5:40 and 7:10 some dangerous overtaking on the corner, driver has already been spoken to about this, i don't want it happening again.

In Melbourne to do a track day we need:

- Club memebership $60-$200
- Helmet $50-$1000
- Entry $120-$300
You guys only pay $25 and get breakfast Awsome.

So what ever you do dont wreck the day. I heard the staff say these are happy laps, not a sprint meeting. So take it easy.

A few of you have very fast cars and want to go fast (who doesnt) so maybe step it up a notch and do some sprints. I stayed around to the sprint meeting, many people had road going cars but were stepping it up with helmet, fire extinguisher and full sleves.

Keep happy laps fun guys. :banana:
