First thing this Friday morning I'll be collecting a number of firsts: my first new car, my first VW and my first car with a GTI badge, yes a Golf GTI DSG in white.
In almost 20 years I've only had 3 cars, and each one was carefully chosen for it's dynamic qualities that fit that point in my life.
First off was a 1984 Alfa Sprint I bought off my dad. Brilliant little car, al-be-it lacking in certain built quality aspects like body work. But regardless, it was the car that rewarded a disciplined approach to driving through my formative years. It was the type of car that helped with the ladies too.
Next came a Peugeot 306 S16. It was a significant step up from the Alfa, with ABS, A/C, power everything and plenty of pock. It's road holding was incredible and really rewarded you on both the track and mountain roads. After quite a few years of pushing it's limit, the Pug was starting to show its age and was requiring more and more maintenance to keep going strong, so it had to move on.
The choice was clear after a single drive, that an MX5 was next on the list. I went with a 1994 NA8 Clubman. This model had Bilstein's and an LSD as standard and was regarded as the pick of the NA model. I found a low kms one and embarked on many years of incremental upgrades over 8 years to end up with a little road rocket that is a real drivers car. Not being overly powered, it rewards you when apexes are nailed and corners are stitched together.
So in 36 hours I'll take a hold of the keys to my next adventure with a MY13 Golf GTI DSG.
When it came to choosing a 5 door car that can carry a few bikes and be as dynamically adept as my previous rides there was really only one choice. The Golf is regarded as the smart choice, the drivers car, the benchmark. Where else would I go?
I was lucky to get the one I did. From what I understand, it's one of the last to come into the country as the MK7 is on it's way however the GTI isn't due for another 12 months and my little 8 month old needs transport now.
I didn't take a test drive , but I know I won't be disappointed when I give it the welly on Friday. The only trouble is that my first drive will be straight to work and not to Mt Glorious!
