My Cousin grabbed a Left Hand Drive MK2 16V GTI that was in Serious need of some love
This thing is pretty cool
260,000kms
Digifizz Digital Dash
Left Hand Drive (how it should be imo)
From the Outside it looked OK.. and in need of a tidy up but scratching the Surface everything began to cave in..
I kinda talked him into getting it. and kicked my self a tad afterwards... not only it was riddled with problems. but i Promised to get it all mint again.. (he is fairly disappointed to say the least)
Things started to get super interesting When what was supposed to be an easy Wide Track conversion (mk3 front and rear subframes) we started hitting all the stumbling blocks after the engine was pulled out!
- Big Rust Hole in the Drivers Door
- Rust hole forming in the Rain Tray
- Subframe had been welded to the Chassis as someone was to lazy to find the correct sized bolt.
- Pedal Box was broken
- Gearbox was naffed
- Heatercore wasnt plumbed in
- Headliner began to drop
- Exhaust System butchered
- Exhaust Headers Cracked
- Seat Back release cables ****ed
So the mission is to fix all the above
and add in some nice new mod cons
- Electric Windows
- MK3 Front and Rear Subframes (5 Stud - Wide Track) all the stuff i was going to use for my MK2 project untill it changed direction to 4 Motion...
- Power Steering Installation
- 288mm Big brakes (MK4 Calipers Front & Rear)
- Fix the headliner
- REplace the sunroof Seal!
- Fix the Rust ole's
- Fix the Paint.
- Super Sprint headers
- and Pretty up and give the Engine a bit of a birthday!
The Poor thing has been loved but needed attention that not many people have the time and space for!

Monday night was good got a reasonable whack done...
- Exhaust Heat Sheild re installed
My Girl was helping she had the vacuum out and lifted all the carpets and vacuumed the floor pan and also all the carpets the interior is spotless which is a bonus! and something that needed to be done so i can tidy all the wiring etc...
While she was doing that I finally completed the Braking system on the front having to use a combination of mk4 Bora 4 Motion Brake lines and twisting the hard line around and bending the bracket the lines seem to be sweet and allow for the turning of the steering axle etc..
Then my lovely assisted manned the brake pedal while I crawled underneath and bled a completely empty brake system.... (took fliping ages!!!!) but the brakes were bled finally **** hot!!!
Drive shafts are installed and semi torqued down which was another step! :)

Tuesday night wasn't too bad either.. this car came with the Hydraulic front engine mount (something I wasn't really interested in keeping + it was FUBAR) I did have a Solid Rubber Front mount also that I could have used but that would have been no fun!.. + After buying a Complete BFI Stealth Engine mount kit from Dubaddiction a few months back I was adamant I was going to use the whole lot!)
My Cousin was In this evening we figured out what we were gonna do and cracked in to it... We butchered up the Factory Hydraulic mount to use it as a base for the BFI Insert to Seat on... once that was removed we found a High Tensile bolt that was almost thick enough and slid in to the centre of the bush. Parted off the head and drilled and tapped a M10 Thread right down the centre...
Once that was on and we found the correct angle for the mounting bolt we layered on some heave Mig wire with some very deep penetration for good measure (haha wouldn't want to read that out of context)

(engine aiming to be back in thursday night)
This mount Modification is experimental... I'm not worried if it fails as it will just prompt a different attempt at modding! :)

Spent the Rest of the afternoon adjusting cable lengths etc (as a few things have moved since before the gearbox swap.)
All the Horribly Grey Cable Tubing I am slowly cutting off and replacing with Black Crinkle Tubing (much nicer and more flexible!
Engine Starts and Runs and Idles like a Trooper
Bit fricken loud at the moment with just the headers (no exhaust tube or mufflers)
Hoping to drive it this week and get it all road legal...
Just some more minor **** too also to get the Power Steering all plumbed up...

a little bit of an update
Not long now to the full respray!
Did a bit of work on Interior Design (of the car) over the Weekend, M M (Not sure if he is a member here) is a genius when it comes to improvising and making something look good.
My Factory door cards were pretty ****y doo so after a Inspirational idea from M M (Interlagos style Tartan)
I had some spare Hard backed door cards (that haven't become weetbix) and have decided to recover them from the hideos Golf CL Spec Material they were covered in...
(While I'm at it I have deleted the horrible window winder holes in the door card!)
Basically the Equation goes something like this

with the Tartan plus some Faux Leather at the bottom should net a pretty nice result.
Was also machining some Centre caps for someone else and thought I should trial a test fit on my compomotives... (looks better I think)

After Laying up the Tartan on the Doors last night.. it was to much.. + Curves & Straight lines never mix all that well...
So had some Fake Suede lying around in my Fabric bag so We gave that a shot.. Glidn should be an apholsterer.. ****ed if i know how he managed to sit that fabric in there with out any wrinkles....
It looks blue in the photos but its infact black

Had a bit of a **** fight with some of the Interior items
I redid the headliner again... found a modern oem-ish (foam backed) black fabric headliner..

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2013/03/ziYpwyV-1.jpg
and also reinforced some late door cards and resin-d the back sides of these cards to waterproof them somewhat!
flagged the tartan wrap for the door cards and found a material as close as possible to stock/oem
so with Window winder holes and mirror adjusters gone now... the door cards looking super clean!

Dont need to?
I as I just used a complete ABF now.. (which is in theory far superior to a 9A / KR Combo.)
I just used the KR Manifold and K Jet injection
she is powerful as now!!!

For the train spotters out there also... I installed pop out windows. too
Few points & Changes for this car...
- I acquired another subframe the other day, I have planned to lower the entire engine by 16mm,
I don't see how weight a little closer to the ground will hurt anything.. CV Geometry will only change slightly...
The Main reasoning behind this is to lower the ABF down and bring the engine sitting to a closer to factory height in the Engine bay... (ABF and 2E blocks are 16mm taller then their earlier counterparts! as most of you will know)
Unfortunately swapping to the ABF has caused a few minor annoyances like the Engine Hitting the bonnet under load. and also pulling the Exhaust Manifold (Super Sprint headers) hard up against the exhaust tunnel..
-While all of this will be occurring, I will be reverting the car back to a NON-PAS rack because of the endless annoying issues I have been having with this Power Assisted Steering System... (pile of ****)

interesting.
If you do some reading up, its quite common to loose about 15mm from the rear engine mount when doing a VR6 conversion, obs with the mk 3 subframe. (which Is what I did).
Is this what you'd planned?

I have already Chopped and Dropped the Cups that the Engine mounts Seat in by 15mm so essentially acheiving the same thing... I don't feel comfortably taking 15mm off the Cast alloy mount itself... :-S

I meant taking 15mm off the rubber insert. requires a little bit of modification of the insert 'housing' (similar to what you did with the front one, with the drilling and tapping of the central rod)
I've got a mk 3 subframe, (VR swap) and all I did was chop down the rear mount around 15 or 20mm.
I used to have a mk 2 front engine mount (unmodified and standard) and modified the bracket (hybrid mk 2/3) to suit the 02A. Using the standard mk 2 crossmemeber. I found that the engine had unacceptable amounts of rock., ie when coming off the throttle at high rpm.
I have since upgraded to a toledo/passat/corrado front crossmemeber (mk 2 fitment, but with a mk 3 mount system) and run a factory bracket (unmodified) with a mk 3 BFI insert. Much better, no issues with rubbing/knocking.

Well
Last weekend netted a few Changes for the better
- Dropped the rear of the engine 16mm on both Sides ABF Clears bonnet now and no longer causes car to vibrate.
- Nice Soft factory Rubber Hydraulic mounts. Threw out the Urethane Mounts
- Converted the car back to Manual Steering and finally killed the notchy steering that has been plaguing this car since the Resto..
and finally sorted the Leaking Flex Joint issue with the headers..
Drives very well sorted now
Also had a Chuckle when I Stumbled across these old picks again!

Small update: Another new Engine (ABF) and a 02A with a LSD...
Purchased a Golf 3 16V last year with a Minter engine and gearbox as donor parts for the MK2.
also got a 02A OBX LSD
K-Jet had had its day, fed up with the hard cold starts in the morning and lumpy running (the lumpy running sounded awesome but it was kinda all show no go), I wanted Key turn reliability and Automated Ignition Timing & Monitored Fuelling

Few stumbling blocks with the LSD install. Some tolerances on the new diff were slightly over sized. so a machinist buddy sorted that for me. but overall relatively painless and the gearbox went back together fairly easily.. drilling apart the old diff sucked ass..
- New Bellevue washers (Cup Washers)
- New 12.9 Diff Body Cap screws
- ARP Ring gear bolts.
- New Diff Bearings and Oil Seals.
Didn't bother touching any of the other bearings.. the gearbox was tight.
