I know this may cause a little controversy, but I realy need to know. what kind of eng. oil should I use? It's a t4 99 petrol, engine has 290k klm. but strong as blows no smoke. I've herd talk of synthetic oil but is that realy necessary? Also dose anyone know where I can get my hands on a owners manual or simmilar? thanx all.

A good quality semi-synthetic oil will do the job. Make sure it has the Volkswagen approval numbers.

Workshop manual?
Try this one - http://www.pitstop.net.au/view/marques-volkswagen/page/query/plu/16347/

I have the diesel version and it is very good - not as detailed as the Bentley (factory) manual but is largely based on it and is considerably cheaper

As for oil?

The lube guide on the valvoline site is recommending a 15W40 engine oil for the 2 litre petrol engine.

By the by, the lube guide on all oil company websites is managed by www.infomedia.com.au and distributed through www.lubeandtune.com.au and they have a very very handy summary service guide available for all T4's (and many other cars) for $5.50 per view (don't forget to print!!). Might be worth checking out

At that mileage I would watch oil levels closely using a 10w-40 oil, also any hydraulic tappet noise.
