New Volkswagen Taigun is a Concept for an Up!-Based Small SUV [Updated] - Carscoop (http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2012/10/new-volkswagen-taigun-is-concept-for-up.html)

For its motivation, the small crossover model utilizes a prototype version of the Up! hatchback's 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engine enhanced with direct fuel injection and turbocharging technology to boost output to 108hp (110PS) and 175Nm (129 lb-ft) at a low 1,500 rpm. A six-speed manual transfers power to the front wheels.

I am surprised that the news page of vwwatercooled has not reported this yet, where the SMH has scooped this!

cross up! is nothing new, the concept was launched last (2011) September at the Frankfurt show.
When an offcial press release hits our desk we will post all about it ;)

Worst journalism i have ever read.

Claiming the "Cross" variants as SUV's is just rediculous.
It's the same car but with plastic moulding's and 15mm taller springs.

Sorry folks, I've since changed my tune - cars that could be lighter, better, etc., yet utilise more resources for the sake of pathetic soccer mums who "feel safer because they are up high"... it's unacceptable these days.

We've fkced the world, and we need a car industry that is more forgiving and conscientious of the environment. Another effing "small version of a 2wd SUV" is not the answer.

I think the Taigun looks great. I'd have one for snow duties - in awd (because our beloved country is so pathetically backward that "snow socks" as seen in Europe, are not "safe" here in the high country - instead, we need to attach wheel chains when it is raining sleet - talk about backwater!).

But a "high riding for safety so that the people in the other car die instead of me, when I fork up my driving skills" is NOT the answer.

But meh... That's just my opinion...

Could not agree more with your soccer mum observation. I really try not to be sexist and so forth but let's call a spade a spade. Generally women driving SUVs and minivans suck at it. And RE the safety issue, the whole "I feel safer up high" is such a rubbish expression. Having owned several 4WD's I can say that I feel so much safer in my GTI because I know that if I need to avoid a collision I have one of the most capable and safe cars on the road to do that. I know that if I swerve to miss something I'm not going to roll over.

Bottom line, if you want to go off road, buy a 4WD. If you're not, buy a hatch or a station wagon. If I was a family man there'd be a Passat V6 wagon in my driveway. Much more elegant and sensible than any small SUV in the city.

By the way, when I mean SUV I don't really mean micro SUV s like the Tiguan, Nissan Dualis and anything smaller than those. I mean Mazda CX5 CX7 CX9, Toyota Kluger/Prado Landcruiser, X5, Merc SUV and so on.

An SUV based on a hatchback platform isn't really a problem in my books. Although personally I don't really have any interest in buying one...

Isn't a CX5 and a Tiguan the same size?
