I've owned the car for just over a year now. And have loved every second of it!!!! ... Other than finding out the guy before me treated it like rubbish
This has meant I've had to spend a fair bit on maintenance unfortunately, but it's all worth it for a car like this
She's done 155,000km ish now and is on the mend.
I figured since I now have a set of V3's in her that I better start up a build thread for the mods that will follow in due time. She also currently has an HPA Competition Haldex Controller fitted
Oh, and the flapper mod. Of Course! haha
I don't own a decent camera so nearly all the photos are from my iPhone, which kinda sucks but oh well. Just more reason for other people to take good photos of her! hahaha
A photo of when she was 100% stock courtesy of BWoodington Photography

I might have missed it, but is it your daily drive?

Yeah they involved working a lot of 7 day weeks at the same time as full-time uni. But all worth it :)
And yes she is my daily drive, and she does a very good job of the commute and lugging of things around etc.
A very impressive all-rounder I must say!

May I suggest a vinyl wrap on you "b" pillars to get rid of the silver.
Will look cleaner and I suggest vinyl as it can be removed later without damaging your original paint.
Maybe black or carbon fibre???

Nah, I had a look at it. It looks nice from a far, but up close I think it would look terrible because the B Pillars are quite different depth wise compared to the glass

I agree, but I'd just mask it well and spray it with black plasti dip. Bam, done. Peel it off if you don't like it later.
Look at how well the 'pillarless' look works on the other golf in the photo...

I Agree with blacking the b pillars makes it look smoother. That and removing the rub strips but thats a bit more messing around. Check sig for what it looks like

Also, it will obviously look a lot more 'seamless' with tinted windows, but that's another decision.. And I don't mind the un-tinted clear windows for a change.. Kind of works with the silver body.

So tonight got the car back all fixed from Mike at P&P. All electrics now working again!
BUT!... there is always a but
I have a creak then clunk noise coming from the rear right hand corner
It seems to happen when weight is transferred off this area, not onto it. Is that kind of noise within the normal parameters of coilover noises? Or should I worry my ass off?
Cheers,
Jed

Umm boot latch was shorting the central locking, interior lights, power windows etc.
Turned out all my wiring to the boot was ****ed, so I got that all replaced and all is well again in the electrics department :)
So your coilovers make no noises?

Wonder why your wiring was in a bad way !
Noises, the odd time depending on the angle of attack when going up or down drive ways. A little creak is all. No clunking noises but.
You got a rear bace fitted ? Like the old TST bace ?

I have a squeak in my front suspension, and from looking around on the net trying to diagnose it it seems one common problem for MK4 noises might be the rear seats and interior lining. Might be worth checking out any loose bits.

how old are the coils? you might have some damage or age issues with some of the rubber/nylon mounts. whilst under pressure or weight, everything is compressed, and when the weight comes off the loose mount does its thing and you get a squeak and/or clunk
JedR32
27-10-2012, 07:28 AM
Two weeks old haha. I took it into my mechanic again (top bloke BTW) and he did a once over if it again and we found that the clunk is just the actual coils of the coilover springs moving on themselves under sudden weight transfer, which is normal. And the creak were from the new control arms being of a rose joint style? So no rubber bushings to stop sound transfer etc.
So all is well :) haha

Silocone piping from Supercheap/Autobarn/Repco/Bunnings?

Yeah I had a look at super cheap and its crazy expensive from there and probably not quite as wide as I'd like it. Might see if bunnings or someone has it :)
Anyone know where I can get that flexible tubing stuff from? I saw someone with it a while back, was quite thin from memory but heat resistant. I think it may have been 'Aerograde' or 'Aerospace grade'... not sure though

So last Thursday night with the help (slash he worked, I supervised) of 2000MN I installed my Simota Racing Intake. What a noise!
It sounds great to start with, nice and bassy induction noise. You can't hear it below 3000rpm or under half throttle, which is great for when you're cruising around etc.
Currently I'm just using the stock air feed pipe, however soon I'll replace this with flexible tubing to draw air up from the passenger side from bumper grill.
I've also noticed a slight increase in torque and a big increase in response ;)
Very happy with the purchase, it looks great too mind you.

About $400 I think from memory from PPCGB (inc. shipping)
And yes I believe they have an option for the 1.8t engines, but not 100% sure. Check out PPCGB's website, I'm sure you'll be able to find something on there :)

Okay so, I've been a bit slack over the past while regarding this thread.
Not a lot has happened though so not much to update.
Car is booked in on the 16th of September to get a new front bumper and get it shaved. Then i'll be ordering personalised plates (classic Euro most likely). Ordering camber plates, fluid dampr, stainless lines and dogbone bushes right now.
After this is all done I'll be looking towards exhaust, tune, new rear bumper and roof, and side skirts. But this and Brakes are a 'in the next 18 months' style plan.
And here are some photos of recent!

Ooft. Staunch. I love the tough appearance and hunkered down stance at the moment you're achieving with the KW V3's Jed. Have you got any photos during the process of cleaning the inside of your wheel arches? I wouldn't mind having a crack at doing mine myself if you could explain the procedure. Number plate delete on these cars makes a big difference, IMO :D Add a Cupra R lip to your order...

I think I do somewhere, but Corey (2000MN) actually did them for me when he did the detail. And he did a sensational job on them. He found a redback spider behind one guard lol. So best to speak to him regarding the process as he has done it on his guards as well and has photos of that too :)

JedR32
23-09-2013, 09:00 AM
Yeah, I'll remove it to fit then reinstall it as it is great for a bit of scrapage protecting as well as helping with aerodynamics at higher speed.
It's part number S1J0825231 and is about $550ish from VW (when my panel beater sourced it through them). So it's not cheap for a piece of plastic haha

Easiest solution would be to remove your front under tray to avoid having to hack it up for the Cupra R lip to fit. With the under tray off, you can see how the splitter will fit.

How'd the install go?
Not great. Not great at all. The spring perches were the wrong size as it turns out my KW V3's are actually linear 60mm race spring style in the front. Some people I asked said they were stock size. So I will have to reorder the bottom part of the camber plates unfortunately. And the Fluidampr crank pulley is not on yet as my mechanic did not have the correct tool. Apparently the torque setting is hugely different than that on the 2.0s and 1.8s etc. So he has that on order and it will go in again once the new Camber Plate bottoms arrive :(

Which spring perches do you have, I have weitec gt which are essentially kw v1 and have two spring perches. The previous owner had bilstein pss10 and had them made to suit the car. I'm happy to do a swap if they are likely to fit yours?

AMAZING!
They are very comfortable on the street and completely transformed the feeling of the car even in the moderate settings I use for the street. When I firm them up for the track they are also great. The adjustability is awesome as on the really hard settings I use for track stuff it is pretty uncomfortable on S++tty Brisbane roads. I would highly recommend them.
I hope that helps with your decision Robbie!

KW do offer lower springs to suit the rear shocks of their coilovers. The fronts should have enough in them to lower it to a nice height. If you want really low I guess you could pull out the front helper springs but I'm not sure what sort of ride quality you would get after that.

Definitely worth having the adjustable rear arms, I need a second set for mine since I've lowered it. I didn't know about the springs either until JIG from vwgolf.net.au mentioned them in his thread. Certainly something I want to get myself someday.

Thanks for the advice fellas!
Who did you purchase from Jed? I have a guy who's quoted me $2300 shipped to my door for KW Variant 3's. Would you say the ride quality is much more comfortable and compliant compared to the stock suspension?
I heard that KW offer the option of having lower springs that can further drop the car by 20mm-25mm. Would it be possible to wire up a switch where I can choose between comfort and sport settings?

I purchased them through Mike Weber at Prestige & Performance (my mechanic also) they were on special. $2300 to your door is a great price, although local support is also good for peace of mind (maybe give preeny at tpr engineering? a call and see what he can do as well). The ride quality improved for me - more progressive. So I feel all the bumps but it is less crash and bash on big ones. My shocks were pretty tired though when I replaced them.
Lower springs wouldn't be a bad idea, especially if you want that 'stanced' look. No, it wouldn't be possible to wire up a switch as they are a manual adjustment. DDC is KW's electronic adjustment kit. I'm not sure if they make an off-the shelf option of this for the R32 (they may be able to do a custom one though if they don't). Adjusting means jacking the car up, taking off the wheel and turning the dials.

So this arvo I discovered big problems :(
I was driving in the city and pulled over to pick my girlfriend up. While sitting there for a few seconds the car started to vibrate really badly. I didn't know why so I gave it a rev to see if it would calm the idle down. It didn't. I turned the car off and then on again and that didn't help either. It sounds like a WRX boxer engine
Here's some footage. It is a lot more exaggerated in real life than in the footage but hopefully one of you wise gentlemen can give me some clues as to what's happening :(

No I haven't but the spark plugs were filthy on cylinder 1, 2 and 3 so we replaced all the plugs. It stopped misfiring after that, but then all of a sudden halfway through a drive it started sounding like a WRX again :(

Wouldn't be a coil pack?
JedR32
20-10-2013, 06:41 PM
Yeh I think it could be. We found the same cylinder misfiring again and when we looked at the coilpacks cylinders 1, 2 and 3 all had small bits of corrosion on them. It's either coilpack, coilpack harness or injector we think... So gonna see if VW will replace my coilpacks tomorrow under the recall scheme as mine were never done. I'm not sure if mine were actually ones that needed doing though. So we'll see...

Yeah Erin and I were working on it all day. We pulled all the coils and changed all the plugs. 1, 2 and 3 were corroded a bit 4, 5 and 6 were fine. You reckon they could get it sorted by Tuesday? I'll have to drive her tomorrow regardless as I have assessment at uni, no public transport to get there and noone to drop me :( devo

21-10-2013, 07:54 AM
Hmmm,
I don't think the plugs and coils are the issue mate. Like I said both my plugs & coils were corroded and it didn't sound like a WRX. It felt rough on cold mornings but that was it...
I think you'll have to look further past that. Did you scan the car? Was there any codes that would point to the problem?
VW will have to order in the coil packs mate... You might get lucky if Sydney/Melbourne have some stock otherwise you'll have to wait for replacements to come from asia or europe. But you'll still need to call and give them your VIN to see if you fall in that recall cycle.

I would say it sounds like an spark issue.
I know on the 1.8Ts its common for heat to wreck the coilpack harness over time, I wouldnt have though there would be as much heat in the VR6 bay though.
If your not in the Recall list might be worthwhile upgrading to TFSI coil packs, would probably be able to get them quickler than OEM ones if VW/Audi dont have any, Audi told me a 4 weeks wait for 3 washers!
2000MN
21-10-2013, 12:04 PM
The VR6 engines run surprisingly hot, they're even worse when they're force inducted.
The TSFI coilpacks won't work. The connectors for the TSFI coils are on the side whilst the 24v VR6 connectors are on the top due to the lack of room from the intake manifold.
The wiring from the coils looked fine. There was a strange noise in the bay around the TB region but I could determine whether it was simply muffled SMF rotational noise as Jed was holding the clutch in. You couldn't hear it over the SMF chatter...
Rev & approx L/hr were about on parr where they should be despite how rough the car was running.

So yesterday Erin, the legend, helped me out all day scanning and troubleshooting the beast. We ended up replacing the spark plugs as three were horribly corroded (I'll upload some pics later). We also found the coilpacks looked pretty average in cylinders 4 through 6. We got it idling rough, but no misfires, though when I drove it the misfire came back. Same cylinder 3 misfiring again. Took it to Prestige and Performance first thing this morning and despite them being booked out they helped narrow it down to a coilpack by switching the coilpack around. The misfire followed where we put the coilpack.
Then I took it to Austral VW as my car turned out to be on the recall list. Amazingly they had 6 coilpacks in stock and replaced all of mine. So now the car runs super smoothly, feels a lot tighter and has a bit more go to it.
Thanks heaps to Corey and Sally who came over Saturday night and helped out. And a massive thanks to Erin for helping me out yesterday and driving me all over Brisbane to get things to fix the beast up!

Hey mate, yeah I'm running adjustable upper and lower rear control arms from Gruvenparts. They give a lot of adjustability at the rear and I have the spherical joints as well. These joints make a bit of squeak and noise as there is no rubber so you have to grease them up once in a while to minimise this :) So it's no biggy.
The gruvenparts were the main ones when I ordered, apparently KW actually have some as well. There are a few more options now from what I've seen. Gruvenparts do seem to be one of the pricier ones though. Just make sure you get upper and lower so you can adjust toe and camber, as my toe went crazy with only camber adjustment... Some people find this doesn't happen others do. But it's easier to just get both sets to start with in my opinion :)

Ahhh okay! Yep I've read a bit about the gruvenparts control arms and apparently over a little time the spherical ends get a little bit of play in them. Nothing to worry about but they just become a little noisy.
Yeah I just enquired about a price for the KW arms, but according to the UK sites they are 270 euros a pair haha.
Whereas the USP motorsport arms are $390 for all 4 arms. Think ill order them and see how they go!

Yeah USP is definitely good value for money. I can't see any reason why they wouldn't be any good, they've sold the Gruvenparts for a while so their arms are probably a copy or use the same design elements. All their other parts seem to be good as well so they'd be good I'd assume :)

Sorry to hear the bad luck Jed & Corey. I will definitely be making the trip up from Sydney for the next one.
Corey, I'd love to see some more photos of the morning meet up. I feel bad that I didn't make the effort in going as I knew how excited people from Sydney were about this special event.
Jed - It's amazing how much cleaner and fresh your car looks with the shaved front bumper and new number plates. I got to hand it to you mate :)
I hope your MKIV R32 Corey (and others) is all sorted and back on the road. Big shame! :ohwell:

Have you considered 25mm rear spacers? To me, seems like 8mm front and 25mm rear are the best combination to bring out the flared arches even more. Got to invest in some of those on your next purchase :)

I'd love to have some spacers. But considering they're illegal and can void my insurance should they be found in the event I crash etc. I just can't risk losing $20,000+ worth of insurance payout at this time in my life :( Maybe one day!

After spending lots of money to get it looking good I've already given it a big ****ing scratch :( And all to try and save it from the predicted hail! Grrrrr never rush parking in the work carpark with stick up lifter metal bits again

Anyone know a good retrimmer/upholsterer to fix it?

So it turns out that this part of the seat is actually vinyl :( Any ideas on where could repair it?
Cheers

How did that happen Jed? I'm guessing wear and tear with age.

Yeh, it wasn't in the best shape when I bought it. Which isn't unusual unfortunately and the wear got worse and worse no matter how well I took care of it. Although putting leather protector on it may not have done it any good considering it's apparently only vinyl :S

Try Lee Brothers
Body trimmers Albion – Lee Brothers Australia Car interior design (http://www.leebrotherstrimmers.com.au/)
I got my cloth Recaro done for $350. Took out the whole bolster section, new foam and material. Looks good.

I actually went to Lee Brother this morning for a quote. Haha! They seemed professional and the owner (I think) was very knowledgable and very friendly. So once I work out when I'm available to get it done I'll call him and confirm the booking.
It's looking like a replacement of leather panel (it apparently is actually leather), and then colour dye the whole seat in the factory colour to match, so that the seat doesn't have a weird looking bit. I think I might get the same done to the passenger seat as well, so will have to ask for a quote on that too.
Thanks for the tip though mate! It's reassuring having someone recommend them to me :)

So based on today's happy laps outing at Lakeside Park Raceway... buy Ground Control Camber Plates! They have an amazingly massive amount of adjustment, and they literally make the car turn in like a go kart. You actually have to turn in consciously slower and less to get the same results as rubber non-adjustable mounts. They made more than a big difference with front end grip, dive under braking, turn in (most notable) and overall feedback of what the front end was doing. Unfortunately the trade-off is plenty of clicking, clunking, and creaking from the front end when parking etc. But if you track your car it is well worth it!
Getting the Fluidampr fitted up tomorrow :D Finally haha

Good to hear Jed.
I'm sure you'll put up with the extra creaking for the gains.
Bit of a bumma about the seat mate.

Yeah exactly! So worth it :)
And yeah, but these thing happen with a car of this age. I've got a quote and trimmer that I'm happy with so I just need to work out when I'll have the time to take it in and get the work done. Hopefully before the end of the year.

For sale at $16,000 or next offer! I need it gone before I pick up my new car on Saturday.
The car is a bargain at this price guys. It has registration until March 2016, just had its major service 1 month ago, and has a valid roadworthy!
