i just took one for a drive this morning and was surprised at how it went, i would consider getting one but only as a town car.

I took one for a drive this morning, has a nice note to it when it gets going.
You do have to go down a gear to get power if you really want it, but its fine at suburb speeds.

Beautiful tight handling, VW really are excelling themselves with this electromechanical steering on the up!
Interestingly this is the first VW in a long time you don't have to push to get reverse !!!

yes i had to think twice where to find reverse.... it feels better than a base polo i think.

I haven't driven a Polo Trendline so can't say anything.
The up! this side of a Polo 77TSI Comfortline has more character to it than the Polo Trendline.

Jodie took one for a spin today.

They're in the Ferntreegully dealership now.

What did Jodie think of it?

I'm trying to upgrade??? downgrade??? Mum from the Mk5 into an up!

She'd buy one in a heartbeat if we were in the market for another car.

With 3 MK1 Golfs, a B1 Passat, an Amarok and a '59 Beetle we're not about to run out of cars anytime soon.

I like the look of the Up, some of the internal features are reminiscent of the air cooled Beetles and their approach to cost control.

The vinyl seats in the model above are an example as is all the exposed steel inside the doors.

Even the same 165 width tyres of the air cooled cars!

Not as fast as the 1800 powered MK1, but not much is, plenty zippy enough around town even with a couple of people on board.

Cool thanks for the pics it's the first Up I've seen with the Comfort Style pack. Not really sure whether the wheels, fog lights and the leatherette seats are worth extra 2.5k though.

I had a look at one today. The Sat Nav thing is a nice touch, cheap enough option and looks a billion times better than that bluetooth thing in the Polos. I'd still prefer the RNS over the add on, but it's better. The sales guy was also saying map updates are free (for three years I think??)

You can see how they have cut costs with all the bare metal and sparse interior, but for what it is it is very nice.

It drives quite nicely and shifts very smoothly. Off the line it seems not too bad but after that it does start to feel a little lacking for my liking... I just keep waiting for the turbo to kick in and it just doesn't happen. Same as when I drove the 1.4 NA Polo, getting back into the 103kW Multivan and it feels like it would leave the up! for dead. Sure it's more powerful but it's also fractionally bigger :P :S

All that aside, as a run around town car I can see it having a huge market, but the price is still going to get up a bit once you add on dealer delivery and on roads.

I'm going to test drive one on Wednesday hopefully. If it drives nicely then I might consider it. Looking at getting back into a Polo 9n3 TDI but I do like the interior on the Up! Alot of the reviews say it's going to be the next big thing for VW.

I was looking at renting one from Europcar in August (overseas) but considering how much highway driving I had ahead of me, the Passat I got was a much better option.

My fiancee and I just registered the first 3 door Up! in Queensland! A little white one with Maps n More. Wanted to get all of the options but VW had no idea how long it would take so we decided to go with what they had on the floor. Will shop around for some nice wheels to compliment it. Pick it up tomorrow!

We took one for a test drive last weekend, they are great little things to drive, a country mile ahead of the other competitors like the Barina, Suzuki Alto, Mazda2 and so on. Everything about it just felt really solid and nicely put together, road noise was minimal, drove really smooth, and was quite nimble and zippy. The styling is pretty neat too in my opinion. The build quality felt better than my GTI (although the GTI now has 35,000km on it, so it's not a fair comparison to a car fresh off the dock).

Drove a Up! last night and then walked away with my order placed for one. 2 weeks to I see it. I was very surprised at how it handles and feels like a much bigger car with so much room inside. Very happy with it indeed.

Thanks, I got the 3 door in white with PID. The radar system is quite good and it's good to see VW putting this on the smaller cars.

Did you test the radar system?
We did at Dub Addiction HQ the other day. Works well for large standing objects like Mitch although moving Mitches are still in danger :D

Gees he's brave. I heard it is only to reduce the severity of accidents and will not always stop you from hitting something. Also that it is designed to see cars and not pedestrians, motorbikes etc.

Even if the car hit you at 10kmh it would knock you flying and give you one hell of a bruise.

went and drove, negotiated with one of these today.
very keen, drives great, cruises the freeway well, stereo is good, maps and more is awesome,
looks like the vr6 will be going! haha.
what prices are people paying, any negotiations? i got 17500 with maps and no other options. thats including delivery to Newcastle which is 2 hours from sydney.
Lowered, 16x7 or 8, vinyl wrapped roof and hood, and i think itll be a great daily.

Tobes_WIR35
30-10-2012, 06:11 PM
That's a fair price. We paid $18,000 for the same thing, but in Qld so on roads and delivery costs might be more.

jamie88
30-10-2012, 09:38 PM
Ah cool :) not sure whether to add comfort pack. Cruise control would be good , not to fussed on the mdi as the maps device does that , and rear park sensors , really I can almost touch the back window haha

Astron Boy
31-10-2012, 07:30 AM
I intend to wait for a good ex-demo with both the comfort packs already installed.
Don't really want much more.

Everyday I refresh Carsales, and the prices incrementally drop.
Basic model, no extras ex demo going for $13,990 (drive away) with the ability to add basic mods like floor mats, m&m, etc.
That works out cheaper than buying a 0k and waiting in line.

jamie88
31-10-2012, 09:50 AM
Maps and more can't be retrofitted , it uses a different dash panel.

Astron Boy
31-10-2012, 10:09 AM
I had also read this, and the people in the UK have a thread on how to fit this if they didn't take the option.
I have rung a couple of dealers to confirm this and hear their bit.

It seems that some dealers are offering it in the adverts in a cheeky way.
They advertise one car with the drive away price, but will have another in stock with the option fitted, simply pay for M&M.
So, you have the base model listed $13,990 DA. But if you want the M&M option, then you would get a different car at $14,490 DA.
Same car, color, different kms, but still an ex demo with XXkms.

Advert: *ask about Maps and More upgrade*

But yeah, in the end, still cheaper than waiting for a newy.

sneaky,
well sydney has one for 16500 with PID,
white,
going to the bank, ( grandpa)
if you google search Vw up stance,
the first thread that comes up has a link to another build thread on one in the uk
its running reset h & r's so about a 60mm drop, mini wheels, and porsche wheels for show with spacers, and some other bits and pieces.
it looks the tits.
im going to get h&r's and have them reset another inch. and run the black stockies until ive killed the tyres.

Astron Boy
31-10-2012, 01:22 PM
Yeah, that's pretty much the same thing I'd be aiming for.
But in red with the factory 'waffle' alloys.
Looks great.
same vinyl piece at the bottom of the bumper, and roof completely covered.

Was messing around with paint before about a possible side decal of sorts for a bit more 'sport' but couldn't get it right.

jamie88
31-10-2012, 05:56 PM
NICE. well i ordered mine today
white with maps, roof racks, mats, wind deflectors.
going to drop her on reset h&rs like the guy in that post, run stock steelies, vinyl wrap the roof and lower bumper insert. also fitting my thule wind fairing to the racks. will get some 16x8s down the track when ive killed the tyres some.

Astron Boy
31-10-2012, 06:42 PM
Let us know how you find the wind deflectors.
Was tossing up getting those, but some cars just don't benefit from them as much.

jamie88

i emailed a few uk sellers and no one will ship to me.

Astron Boy
01-11-2012, 10:36 AM
Well, I can definitely get them here.

Sorry, unsure if I should be doing this, I know this is partially classified as trading.

vw didnt call me today to say my finance was approved, they are a pretty ****ty dealership though, got tossed to two different salfepeople, had to wait for them for ages to take phonecalls and ****, hopefully ill get the ok tomorow. i think im going to keep the vr6 though, its way to fun to drive. except for the lack of air con its an awesome car.

I bought the $13990 demo base model one on carsales......i think it's a good buy...considering Hyundai are doing driveaway on the i20 for the same price.

the cheapest 'other' dealer would offer driveaway was on the floor stock was $15,800 and they wouldn't budge.

jamie88
01-11-2012, 09:36 PM
thats awesome, no maps im guessing ! there was one in sydney for 14700 that was the cheapest base model i could find. well done at 13990 drive away ! what colour

Astron Boy
01-11-2012, 09:47 PM
Red 2 door?

There are a few demos around in base form below the 0km price, but depends if you want the 2 or 4 door, and color.

Grats on the purchase meanwhile.

jamie88
01-11-2012, 09:54 PM

jamievr6 congrats on the purchase.

i was actaully thinking of running these wheels....cooper 16" wheels..

MINI Cooper S spoke style wheels 16" Italian made | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MINI-Cooper-S-spoke-style-wheels-16-Italian-made-/160463517854?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item255c5ef89e)

not sure about the lowering...if i'm gonna do it properly..gotta match the spring with shock...not really a cheap way of doing things....at least $1600.

wonder if wholesale suspension in Penrith can whip up anything.

jamie88
04-11-2012, 08:24 AM
Thanks ! They look pretty cool ! I devinately want a dished wheel though. I'm thinking of running bbs RS reps on the up , and my real ones on the vr6. Then they can be like twins. Not sure whether to wait for coilovers though and just keep it stock until then. Pay it off etc.

So VWA have a $12,990 (3dr)/ $13,990 (5dr) deal going driveway. Another $500 for M&M, which I think is pretty nifty, and $500 for metallic (i.e. not red or white). So 14,990 drive away with both those options - although the boss likes red so maybe I'll save a bit.

Other options, sunroof, alloys etc don't really seem worth it. So, apart from floor mats (one dealer said he'd chuck them in), I'm not sure there's anything to else to haggle for. Any thoughts?

PS I know it's only on runouts but they're the same car. So any reason to not take the deal and haggle for ages over an MY13 (or more likely an MY12 with '13 rego)?

i picked up my black up! with m&m for $13,609 (inchcape @ sydney parramatta)
only extra $ i spent was on a set of custom euro plates to match my wife's jetta
the fuel consumption is crazy, 80% city driving under heavy traffic + 20% highway driving, i still manage 700km from that puny 35L fuel tank

Ive had my up, for about 1 month now and still enjoy getting into it every morning. I needed something to daily as my e30 was finally giving me issues and needed to go on blocks for some work.

I ended up getting a 5 door white (wanted a 3 door, but they only had a 5 door) Up with M&M and tinting for 13,800 driveaway. I think at that price it would be silly to buy a Suzuki Alto and Mirage, youre getting a VW at the end (even if it is the baby). That said, they have a lot of amazing features and while it is a "cheap" car, it doesnt feel like it. The interior door paint being exposed is a nice touch, the pop out rear windows are something different and while it is only a 3 cylinder 1.0, its actually enjoying to drive because of the light wieght design and the car actually has feeling (lacking in many small cars).

Ohh and did I mention I average about 3.8L/100KM (mixed). Have taken several people in it and so far everyone is amazed and would own one. I think VW Australia has finally understood, for the most part, people are just driving by themselves and dont need a large car.

i picked up my black up! with m&m for $13,609 (inchcape @ sydney parramatta)

managed to get full reimbursement of $500 for the maps & more as the dealer made a mistake by delivering the car without the navigon unit and i made a complaint to the dealership. they were kind enough to offer reimbursement. (though at first they offered me a VW jacket..)
